Sir, As Sir John Major’s letter (May 22) rightly notes, the misjudged suspension of Lord Heseltine from the Conservative whip illustrates just how far the party leadership has drifted from reality. It is in stark contrast to the treatment of the multiple elected Conservatives openly boasting of their support for the Brexit Party, with no consequences. It ignores the fact that up to five million Conservatives who backed Remain in 2016 have been struggling with a conflict of loyalties for what many now feel is too long. Most of these voters agree with Lord Heseltine that a “final say” referendum on Brexit is vital. If such voices are not welcome in today’s Conservative Party, that party can hardly expect to get their votes.
