Blackout leader: Editorial on India leading the world when it comes to Internet shutdowns
India is the world’s leader when it comes to internet shutdowns — for the sixth year in a row — according to a report by Access Now, a global digital rights non-profit organisation. In all, more than half of all global internet shutdowns were attributed to India since 2017, according to the report. The implications of internet shutdowns — maintaining security and law and order is often the fig leaf used for such mischief — can be wide-ranging. The government argues that internet shutdowns help it stop the spread of misinformation and prevent troublemakers from organising violence. The Supreme Court has in the past made it clear that it is uneasy about internet shutdowns and the opacity in the decision-making behind restrictions to access the internet.

Six, including four Indians, indicted for staging robberies to apply for immigration status
WASHINGTON: Six individuals, including four Indian nationals, were on Friday indicted by a federal court for staging armed robberies in Chicago and the suburbs so that the victims could apply for immigration visas reserved for certain crime victims in the United States. U-Visa is set aside for victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful to law enforcement or government officials in an investigation or prosecution. The indictment alleges that the four individuals paid Nayi thousands of dollars to participate in the scam. During the staged robberies, individuals acting as robbers brandished what appeared to be firearms, approached the purported victims and demanded money and property, the indictment states. Afterwards, some of the purported victims submitted forms to local law enforcement to obtain certification that they were victims of a qualifying crime and had been or would be helpful in the investigation, the indictment states.

According to the Manipur government, ‘The Hindu’ lacks a clear understanding of the deeper issues in the region. The influx of illegal immigrants has been an ongoing issue, exacerbated by the military coup in Myanmar. During initial field visits, 2,187 illegal immigrants were found at 41 locations across Manipur. This identification drive caused panic among the illegal immigrants, contributing to the outbreak of violence.

More than 60% of world's coral reefs may have bleached in past year, NOAA says
Nearly two-thirds of the world's coral reefs have been subjected to heat stress bad enough to trigger bleaching over the past year, the leading agency monitoring coral reefs said on Thursday. Now, the agency reports some 60.5% of the world's reef area has been affected and that number is still rising. "I am very worried about the state of the world's coral reefs," NOAA's Coral Reef Watch coordinator Derek Manzello said in a monthly briefing. Triggered by heat stress, coral bleaching occurs when corals expel the colourful algae living in their tissues. The situation is likely to worsen this summer, as heat stress is once again accumulating in the Southern Caribbean.
