Climbers have turned Mount Everest into a high-altitude garbage dump
Spring is go time for climbers who hope to summit Mount Everest, Earth’s highest peak above sea level. At the base camp, microplastics – likely from discarded mountaineering clothing, tents, ropes and boots – have been found in water and snow samples. Some of these villagers work at Everest base camp and are exposed there too. Camp Four, the last site that climbers occupy before they attempt to summit Everest, is covered with garbage and frozen, wind-swept feces. At Everest base camp, there are just collection barrels under toilets.

In a polarised political environment, Community Notes suggestions often show dueling points of view soon after an initial note has been suggested. “To make Community Notes work X has to want to make it work, I think it’s pretty clear that’s not really a priority for X. The platform has struggled to combat misinformation through the Notes feature for years in other countries.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its verdict under Article 131 on the Bengal government challenging the decision of the CBI to probe various cases in the state despite the Mamata government withdrawing in 2018 its general consent for the central agency’s investigations. Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta reserved the verdict after over two days of hearing on the issue. “It is devastating to say CBI is a police force of the Union government. Article 131 empowers the Supreme Court to adjudicate disputes between the Centre and States or even between two states. It was Mehta’s argument that Article 131 empowers the Supreme Court to adjudicate disputes between Centre and States or with States, but the CBI is an independent investigating agency hence, the petition ought to be dismissed at the threshold.
