Rupee settles on flat note at 83.51 against US dollar
MUMBAI: The rupee settled for the day on a flat note at 83.51 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday, as the support from easing crude oil prices was negated by strong dollar demand. "The Indian rupee traded flat to negative on weak domestic markets and strong US dollar. However, a decline in crude oil prices cushioned the downside," said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. "Weakness in crude oil prices may support rupee at lower levels. The broader NSE Nifty settled flat at 22,302.50 points.

While the day is considered auspicious for marriages, the socially accepted crime of child marriage also takes place on this occasion. From the Age of Consent Bill 1860, and the Indian Penal Code provisions barring abduction for the purpose of marriage, to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 (PCMA), India has one of the most comprehensive legal systems to prevent child marriage. The Supreme Court dealt with the issue of sexual intercourse with a child in a marital relationship as an offence tantamount to child rape, first in Bachpan Bachao Andolan vs Union of India in January 2017 and then in Independent Thought vs Union of India. In recent years, several high courts have opined that child marriage is allowed under personal laws in various communities.

The federal judge in Florida presiding over the classified documents prosecution of former President Donald Trump has cancelled the May 20 trial date, postponing it indefinitely. The New York case involves several of the same lawyers representing him in the federal case in Florida. ADVERTISEMENTCannon said in a five-page order Tuesday that it would be “imprudent” to finalise a new trial date now, casting further doubt on federal prosecutors' ability to bring Trump to trial before the November presidential election. The Supreme Court is weighing Trump's arguments that he is immune from federal prosecution in a separate case from special counsel Jack Smith charging him with plotting to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Prosecutors in Fulton County, Georgia have also brought a separate case related to election subversion, though it's not clear when that might reach trial.

Gov’t agencies back creation of body to develop, regulate AI
Representatives of DICT, Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Agriculture (DA), and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), among other agencies, said they agree with the provisions of the AI bill. Ibrahim also pointed out the need for a “national reskilling and upskilling” to give workers the capacity to use AI tools. Cybersecurity expert Dominic Ligot, founder of Data Ethics PH, said speed is key when you talk about AI. He also suggested the creation of a Code of Conduct in dealing with AI. Members of the House Committee agreed to create a technical working group to harmonize all the AI bills.
