Photo: GettyNovelist Roisin Meaney qualified as a teacher and first worked in Dublin and in Zimbabwe. Then after a stint as an advertising copywriter in London, she tried her hand at writing a book. In 2022, she was shortlisted for the Library Association’s ‘author of the year’ category at the An Post Irish Book Awards. The Kerry-born writer is currently working on her 22nd novel, Moving On, which is due for publication in February. It cost €30,000 and was easily the most expensive car I’d ever bought – but I was in a post-pandemic shopping mood and said ‘to hell with it’.

The ongoing wait for short-term letting legislation was raised as a commencement matter in the Seanad this week. The Department will be publishing those guidelines in alignment with the publication of the short-term letting and tourism Bill. The introduction of the register will provide an accurate record of all short-term letting stock across the country. The proposed short-term letting and tourism Bill will allow Fáilte Ireland to have a full picture of tourism accommodation across Ireland. "We want to protect those genuine short-term tourism rental properties.

23 Jun 2024| 05:43am ISTMission for Political Reservation presses demand for ST quotaAsks Union govt to fulfil demand guaranteed to Scheduled Tribes communities during 2024 Lok Sabha polls; knock at door of Opposition to pressurise ruling dispensation; say political reservation was also their agenda tooTeam HeraldPANJIM: The Mission for Political Reservation on Saturday demanded that BJP-led NDA government introduce a bill in Parliament to reserve seats for Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities in Goa and if not to bring an Ordinance so that process is started on immediate basis. The Mission for Political Reservation also demanded that the opposition parties i.e.India Bloc should put pressure on the ruling dispensation since political reservation was also their agenda too during the recently held Lok Sabha elections. Mission for Political Reservation President Adv John Fernandes said that the Union government should fulfil the demand of political reservation guaranteed to STcommunities during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. This will further delay as the procedure involved was lengthy and because of which the Scheduled Tribes of Goa might not even get the reservation in the Assembly elections due in 2027. He reiterated his demand to drop the said provision.

This morning I woke early, before six, and crept out of the bedroom and out of the house to run. There were chatty ravens at one end of the beach and watchful gannets nesting in the cliffs at the other. Photograph: Andrew Testa/The New York TimesWe met again when he stopped me to ask directions as I ran back to the B&B. Dunno, I said, about an hour and a half, maybe around 10 miles but it’s slower on sand. As if it was a waste, to run along a beach and nod to a seal and chat to some ravens and not count.

Photo by Sam Barnes/SportsfileHard to Hyde the disappointmentI hadn’t attended a senior football championship match in Hyde Park in 23 years until last Sunday, and Mayo played that day as well – and didn’t even get a draw! Don’t forget I grew up in an era when our Leinster SFC game was referred to as ‘the annual outing’! Exactly 36 years ago, I was part of a gang of seven who spent eight unforgettable days in West Germany for Euro 88. It is entirely understandable why Westmeath Gaels are nervous as to what the next few years will bring on the senior football front. Throw in Kerry, whose win in TEG Cusack Park all but scuppered Fortune’s side on day one of the Joe McDonagh Cup.

Every time I come to Norway, I’m fascinated by their experiment in big government, and how little people are bothered by high taxes. (Cameron Hewitt / Rick Steves’ Europe)By Rick Steves / Rick Steves’ EuropeOn my last visit to Oslo, I was struck by how peaceful the city felt. Every time I come to Norway, I’m fascinated by their experiment in big government. Nowadays, Norwegian restaurants and bars are routinely equipped with blankets so those who still smoke can do so outside — even in the cold season. Edmonds resident Rick Steves (www.ricksteves.com) writes European guidebooks, hosts travel shows on public TV and radio, and organizes European tours.

Promising review: "My pool is so old school and boring that I bought these to liven it up, and what a difference!! My pool went from 'meh' to WOW! Once inflated, a few hours in the sun is sufficient, and they are charged and ready to go. There is no manual way to power them on or off; they glow all night long. I really liked how easy these were to fill and charge, and I like the solar power and the amazing color display.

School's out, and unless you've booked them into summer camp, the kids are home for the next few months. Here's where the law in Massachusetts stands on leaving your kids home unsupervised. Is there a minimum age for leaving your kids at home? This definition is not dependent upon location (i.e., neglect can occur while the child is in an out-of-home or in-home setting.) “School behavior can also be a good indicator because school is where children spend the most of their time without their parents watching.

One of Take That’s support acts for their Friday night Malahide Castle gig, St Lundi, said the band usually brings the sunshine with them. But they were right, the rain dried up, with the sun shining just in time for golden hour and most importantly, showtime. The setlist touched on all of the hits, from the Million Love Songs that started it all, to the completely heady These Days and Never Forget. After all these years, the trio have learned not to take themselves too seriously, even if they are seriously talented. The band was electric, the crowd was joyous, and most importantly, The Flood, indeed, couldn’t stop us dancing again.

Ireland is among countries most likely to appeal to international housing investors because of sizeable demand and requirement for residential accommodation for students, senior citizens and the growing population, according to a new report. However, it may be the end of the year before big funds return to the rental market here. But the report says this strengthens the case for investing in living assets, especially as interest rates ease. It also expects the numbers of senior Irish citizens to grow by 50pc over the next 16 years, which would also be the fastest rate in Europe. “From a real estate perspective, this greying of Europe points to a likely significant increase in demand for purpose-built healthcare and senior living accommodation,” it adds.
