In 2022, she was shortlisted for the Library Association’s ‘author of the year’ category at the An Post Irish Book Awards. The Kerry-born writer is currently working on her 22nd novel, Moving On, which is due for publication in February. It cost €30,000 and was easily the most expensive car I’d ever bought – but I was in a post-pandemic shopping mood and said ‘to hell with it’.

The ongoing wait for short-term letting legislation was raised as a commencement matter in the Seanad this week. The Department will be publishing those guidelines in alignment with the publication of the short-term letting and tourism Bill. The introduction of the register will provide an accurate record of all short-term letting stock across the country. The proposed short-term letting and tourism Bill will allow Fáilte Ireland to have a full picture of tourism accommodation across Ireland. Herald: Netravali sarpanch, watershed panel members quit over ‘fraud’ charges
The villagers also alleged that two panchayat members availed the benefits of the scheme. The Watershed Development Committee was constituted during meeting held at Vichundrem ward, which was selected under the Scheme, on November 27, last year. Refuting all the allegations, the sarpanch said that he was resigning from the post for free and fair inquiry. Following this, all other committee members also resigned. Vichundrem from Netravali Panchayat, Colomb in Rivona Panchayat, Portem in Kurdi-Wadem Panchayat and Sulcorna in Cavrem-Pirla Panchayat in Sanguem constituency were selected for implementation of the scheme.

The Mission for Political Reservation also demanded that the opposition parties i.e.India Bloc should put pressure on the ruling dispensation since political reservation was also their agenda too during the recently held Lok Sabha elections. Mission for Political Reservation President Adv John Fernandes said that the Union government should fulfil the demand of political reservation guaranteed to STcommunities during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. This will further delay as the procedure involved was lengthy and because of which the Scheduled Tribes of Goa might not even get the reservation in the Assembly elections due in 2027. He reiterated his demand to drop the said provision.

Don’t forget I grew up in an era when our Leinster SFC game was referred to as ‘the annual outing’! Exactly 36 years ago, I was part of a gang of seven who spent eight unforgettable days in West Germany for Euro 88. It is entirely understandable why Westmeath Gaels are nervous as to what the next few years will bring on the senior football front. Throw in Kerry, whose win in TEG Cusack Park all but scuppered Fortune’s side on day one of the Joe McDonagh Cup.

Gig review: Take That deliver mighty Malahide Castle show with all of the hits on display
One of Take That’s support acts for their Friday night Malahide Castle gig, St Lundi, said the band usually brings the sunshine with them. But they were right, the rain dried up, with the sun shining just in time for golden hour and most importantly, showtime. The setlist touched on all of the hits, from the Million Love Songs that started it all, to the completely heady These Days and Never Forget. After all these years, the trio have learned not to take themselves too seriously, even if they are seriously talented. The band was electric, the crowd was joyous, and most importantly, The Flood, indeed, couldn’t stop us dancing again.

New Lord Mayors elected in Dublin and CorkFine Gael's James Geoghegan has been elected as the new Lord Mayor of Dublin. The 39-year-old was appointed to the role at a meeting of Dublin City Council in City Hall on Friday evening. The Ranelagh man becomes the 356th Lord Mayor of Dublin, succeeding Cllr Daithí de Róiste. In Cork, Cllr Dan Boyle was elected to become the new Lord Mayor. Cllr Boyle announced fellow Green Party member, Cllr Honore Kamegni, will be the Deputy Lord Mayor.

The 68-year-old from the Derry area died following the incident close to Maydown Police Station on Wednesday. Inspector Cherith Adair from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit said: “We received a report shortly after 1pm of a collision involving a police vehicle driven by a contracted member of police staff and a motorcycle in the vicinity of Maydown Police Station. “Officers attended the scene along with our colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service; however, the motorcyclist sadly passed away later in hospital. “Our thoughts are with the family at this time and an investigation is now under way to establish the circumstances.

Housing demand primes Irish market for return of institutional investors, says report
Ireland is among countries most likely to appeal to international housing investors because of sizeable demand and requirement for residential accommodation for students, senior citizens and the growing population, according to a new report. However, it may be the end of the year before big funds return to the rental market here. But the report says this strengthens the case for investing in living assets, especially as interest rates ease. It also expects the numbers of senior Irish citizens to grow by 50pc over the next 16 years, which would also be the fastest rate in Europe. “From a real estate perspective, this greying of Europe points to a likely significant increase in demand for purpose-built healthcare and senior living accommodation,” it adds.
