AlcoholLater in the day, there were two sessions on alcohol misuse and health consequences. The former Medical Council Vice-President began by outlining current practices at SVUH, including the “six-month rule” on alcohol abstinence for liver transplant candidates. Dr Dillon then presented data showing self-reported alcohol relapse rates of between 30 and 40 per cent at five years post-transplant for patients in this category. She concluded by saying that the period of alcohol abstinence is a starting point for assessment but should not be the final point. Alcohol, he argued, is cheaper than it used to be and there is a close relationship between alcohol costs and consumption.

However, over time it became clear there was a need to improve the structure of endoscopy training, he said. Overall, Prof Doherty concluded that there is evidence that simulation training is useful in endoscopy training, not just at the foundation stage but throughout training. “It’s a special gathering place for anyone who needed community and anyone who needed that safe place,” she said. Federal prosecutors focused on proving that the attack at Club Q — a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ people in the mostly conservative city — was premeditated and fuelled by bias. Aldrich, appearing in an orange prison uniform with head shaved and wrists handcuffed, declined to speak at the sentencing. Ahead of the hearing, Ms Gamblin said a true member of the LGBTQ+ community would know about the discrimination and the mental health challenges they face and wouldn’t attack its members in such a sanctuary. Aldrich visited the club at least eight times before the attack, including stopping by an hour and a half before the shooting, according to prosecutors.

This year, 349 graduates from Irish medical schools applied for 350 GP training places but 161 of them were not accepted, internal data from the Irish College of GPs shows. However, the Irish College of GPs defended the figures, saying graduates from Irish medical schools were three times more likely to get a training place than applicants from schools outside the EU. The figures, seen by the Irish Examiner, do not relate to nationality with some colleges abroad having Irish students among their graduates and Irish colleges having international students among their graduates. There were 1,311 applicants including graduates of medical colleges in Ireland, Britain, across the EU, and outside the EU. “There are no concerns about graduates from Irish medical schools,” Dr Cullen said.
