Kenneth FoxIrish authorities have set up a high-level implementation group to join a European ports network tasked with tackling the booming sea trade in international drug trafficking. Two months earlier, 2.25 tonnes of cocaine worth more than €150 million was found onboard a bulk cargo vessel off the Cork coast. The EU drugs agency and the EU Home Affairs Directorate have warned that South American drug cartels are increasingly targeting “smaller ports” — away from the major ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam — and that this could include “all ports in all countries” including Ireland. The European Ports Alliance brings together the State and the private sector to boost intelligence gathering and cooperation between police, customs, and privately-run ports. The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction said 323 tonnes were seized in 2022, compared to 303 tonnes in 2021 and up from 80 tonnes in 1996.

England secure opening Euro 2024 win with nervy victory over SerbiaPA Sport StaffEngland have got their Euro 2024 campaign off to a winning start, defeating Serbia 1-0 in their Group C meeting in Gelsenkirchen. Gareth Southgate's men started in dominant fashion and the Euro 2020 runners-up were duly rewarded with an opening goal inside 13 minutes. Mitrovic fired wide as he looked to capitalise on a miscontrol from Alexander-Arnold before Walker’s cross evaded everyone in the Serbia box with England looking to add to their lead. With Serbia arguably on top, Southgate abandoned the Alexander-Arnold experiment for the evening with a little over 20 minutes remaining as Gallagher was brought on in his place. England were hanging on at the death as Serbia pushed them deeper and deeper in search of an equaliser that never came as Southgate’s side held firm to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

When I ask my father if he celebrated Father’s Day with his own dad, he tells me: “Oh, it’s very much a recent invention.” I pause. “At least I don’t remember it,” he continues, “but maybe that’s because we didn’t practice it in our house”. Where Father’s Day is concerned, however, he’s basically correct. For Father’s Day, it would seem rude to deny him this honour. He died in 1976, four years after the genesis of Father’s Day in this part of the world, and nine years before I was born.

Much can be discussed on what we mean by the words ‘preservation’ and ‘identity’, though the kind of identity whose discussion should suffice us here, should be ‘regional identity’. By regional identity, we should be meaning to something that characteristically ‘binds’ the individual to the region, i.e. Xenophobia, symptomizes an essentially prejudicially attitude, the sickest of parochial ills that equates the degradation and censure of another (identity) with the preservation of one’s identity. Identity preservation and xenophobia mustn’t go hand in hand. The erroneous understanding of ‘preservation’ as ‘compositional purity’ (as though identity were a liquid) must be done away with, for it then produces the false notion of ‘adulteration’.

Jonathan McCambridge, PAUlster Unionist leader Doug Beattie has said it would be a “personal failure” if his party does not return to Westminster following the upcoming UK general election. The Army veteran has been party leader for three years. The Ulster Unionists, once the dominant force in Northern Ireland politics, currently have no MPs. I think if I wasn’t the party leader I would be running now. It is an honour of my life to lead the Ulster Unionist Party.

By Jonathan McCambridge, PAMost people now expect an early general election will be held in the autumn, Labour leader Ivana Bacik has said. Ms Bacik was reacting following the results of European and local government elections across the State. This has led to increased speculation that Taoiseach Simon Harris could call an early general election. “I think most people believe the general election will be held in the autumn,” Ms Bacik told RTÉ’s The Week In Politics show. She said: “For Government parties in a mid-term election, I think right across the globe, there is always the understanding that you will get a hit – I think it’s important to acknowledge that.
