Election results raise prospect of another 'coalition of equals', says Varadkar
Jonathan McCambridge, PAEuropean and local election results create the prospect of another “coalition of equals” between Fine Gael and Fianna áail, Leo Varadkar has said. The results of last week's elections saw Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael,reinforce their positions, while Sinn Féin fell short of expectations. Leo Varadkar speaking at an event in Belfast (Brian Lawless/PA)Fianna Fáil doubled its presence in the European Parliament to four, with Fine Gael also on four. Fianna Fáil emerged as the largest party in local government with 248 seats on councils, with Fine Gael close behind on 245. Speaking at an event in Belfast, Mr Varadkar welcomed the election results.

A Labour government could be helpful for Ireland, former Taoiseach says
The former Taoiseach was asked about the implications of the UK’s July poll for the island of Ireland during an appearance at an event in Belfast on Saturday. He said: “I think if it is a Labour government that could be helpful for Ireland. “They certainly will want a closer relationship with the European Union.”Mr Varadkar added: “I think they will be more even-handed when it comes to dealing with Northern Ireland. “Whereas the Conservative Party is the Conservative and Unionist Party, I think the Labour Party is probably a bit more even-handed.”Mr Varadkar also welcomed Labour pledges to repeal the controversial Act to deal with the legacy of the Northern Ireland Troubles. Labour has said it would restore legacy inquests and the ability for Troubles victims to bring civil cases if it comes to power.

Next week will begin cloudy with some patchy rain and drizzle though there will be some bright and sunny spells at times on Monday. Daytime temperatures will reach between 13C and 18C while overnight they could fall to as low at 8C. Any showers on Tuesday will mostly impact coastal areas in the north, while the rest of the country will be dry with cloud and sunny spells. While Met Éireann has forecast that it will be more unsettled later in the week, Wednesday is expected to be dry with sunny spells and temperatures of between 14C and 18C.

Leo Varadkar: Apologies could begin to ‘change hearts and minds’ over unity
Strong and specific apologies from the IRA and the Irish state for its historical treatment of non-Catholics could help to "change hearts and minds" over unification, Leo Varadkar has said. The former Taoiseach said it had to be acknowledged that in its first decades of existence the Irish state was "sectarian in character". Mr Varadkar was then asked if, as part of a unity process, the IRA should apologise to victims or the Irish state for its past treatment of non-Catholics. He said: "I think we should certainly acknowledge that the first few decades of the Irish free state and the Irish state which followed was sectarian in character." "In terms of apologies I think apologies are appropriate but you have to be careful about them.

He also said he believed the next Irish government should consider using its budget surplus to set up a fund to prepare for the economic challenges of Irish unity. He told the rally that while he did not hold any government position any more, he still wanted to advocate for unity. “In terms of apologies, I think apologies are appropriate, but you have to be careful about them. “I think if we are going to start to change minds and hearts among Protestant people, a much more stronger, specific apology for what was done and what we did, I think would help to change the hearts and minds.”

Cllr O'Flynn was one of eleven sitting councillors who ran under the Independent Ireland banner in the local elections, and all were elected. The former Fianna FáilersCllr Noel ThomasSeveral others elected under the Independent Ireland banner were former Fianna Fáil representatives who have since turned independent, among them is Shane P O'Reilly, who was re-elected to Cavan County Council. Sporting chanceShaun Cunniffe is another former Labour councillor who has been elected for Independent Ireland. Independent Ireland ran a candidate in each of the three west Cork electoral areas, with all of them being elected. The only woman to be elected for Independent Ireland was Linda de Courcy, who ran in Clondalkin.
