The election of Galway’s first ever Black local representative and the emergence of a new force in local politics were among the standout stories to emerge this week after last Friday’s Local Election. Independent Ireland, one of the country’s newest political parties, secured six seats on Galway County Council – topping the poll in one area – while Helen Ogbu’s election made history as Galway’s first ever Black elected representative. Six Independents were elected, five fewer than in 2019 as Michael Fitzmaurice’s fledgling party, Independent Ireland, made big gains on its first electoral outing. Shaun Cunniffe made a return to the political stage in Tuam under the Independent Ireland banner, too, while co-opted councillor Declan Kelly had his first electoral success for the same stable in Loughrea LEA. In the city, Independent Ireland took no seats and lost its only sitting candidate, Noel Larkin, in City East.

Sinn Fein has 102 councillors, an increase on 81 council seats won in 2019, but party leader Mary Lou McDonald has admitted the result fell below their expectations. In the European elections, despite days of counting votes it is not yet clear whether Sinn Fein will increase its tally of MEPs. Only one other MEP has so far been elected in Ireland – Fine Gael’s Sean Kelly in Ireland South. Independent TD Michael McNamara and Sinn Fein TD Kathleen Funchion are well placed, with Fianna Fail candidate and 1994 Eurovision host Cynthia Ni Mhurchu and outgoing MEP Mick Wallace also in contention. If the race stays as it currently stands, Barry Cowen will be heading to Strasbourg as an MEP for Fianna Fail in the fourth seat.

Brent crude prices rose by $1.33, or about 1.6%, to $83.25 a barrel after prices had eased more than 2% last week. The International Energy Agency, the US Energy Information Administration, and the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries have this week updated their views on the global oil demand-supply balance for 2024. The International Energy Agency also predicted oil demand growth would plateau at 105.6m barrels per day by 2029, and be well eclipsed by supply — a full 8m barrels above projected demand — by 2030. The International Energy Agency's view for next year, and up to the 2030s, is bleak, Mr Varga noted. The US Energy Information Administration this week raised its 2024 world oil demand growth forecast to 1.1m barrels a day, while Opec stuck with its 2024 forecast of 2.25m barrels.

Terence O’Rourke described the current TV licence collection system as “archaic and out of date”. Approximately 85 per cent of revenue from TV licence fees goes to RTÉ to carry out its public service broadcasting commitments, while it also earns money through commercial operations. They also found there was a lack of trust between the RTE board and its former executive, as well as an informality within board processes and a “limited appetite to learn”. Former RTÉ chairwoman Siun Ni Raghallaigh resigned following a public dispute with the minister. However, he also warned that RTÉ will be faced with many challenges in a “very disruptive decade ahead”.

Ten subsidised serviced sites to be provided in MoateThe provision of 10 subsidised serviced sites for those wishing to build their own homes in Moate town was approved at the monthly meeting of Westmeath County Council and approved on the proposal of Cllr Vinny McCormack, seconded by Cllr Tom Farrell. However, Mr Kehoe stressed that developing private sites like these and putting them on the market is not a money maker, it costs money. “It is going to cost in the between €900,000 and €1 million to develop these sites and sale of the sites is unlikely to realise more than €500,000,” he explained. The proposal is to provided 10 subsidised serviced sites, to include provision of service road, wastewater, water, electrical cabling and amenity open space, at Killeenboylegan, Clara Road, Moate. After the sites are sold, but before any building starts, a road safety assessment will be carried out.
