David Young, PACounting will resume in the local and European elections later, with the first winning candidates in the European election poll set to be declared. Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Greens will undoubtedly be at least considering the option of calling an earlier-than-expected general election after performing better than many pollsters had predicted. Counting in the European election began on Sunday and only one of the three constituencies – Dublin – has completed its first count. The third election last Friday saw voters in Limerick given the opportunity to select what will be the State’s first directly elected mayor. Counting in the Limerick mayoral contest will begin on Monday, with tallies indicating that independent candidate John Moran is in the lead.

History-maker Carlos Alcaraz beats Alexander Zverev in epic French Open finalBy Andy Sims, PA, ParisCarlos Alcaraz made history and gained a measure of Spanish revenge by beating Alexander Zverev in five sets to win a first French Open title. Fourth seed Zverev had sent old warrior Nadal out on his shield for probably the last time in the first round. But Alcaraz was suddenly missing more often than his opponent and Zverev reeled off five games, saving a break point at 6-5, to move ahead. A tired service game from Zverev, who has spent almost 24 hours on court this fortnight, gave Alcaraz the early advantage. ‘Carlos, Carlos’ chanted the crowd on Philippe Chatrier in scenes usually only reserved for 14-time winner Nadal.

Irish deputy premier Micheal Martin said that it was making for a “really fascinating contest” for the three final seats in Ireland South. As the ballot papers are quite long, an initial “sub-sort” took place at Nemo Rangers count centre in Co Cork on Sunday. But despite having the same number of candidates and count staff as last year, it was “unlikely” that the first count would be complete on Sunday. There were five MEPs elected to the Ireland South constituency in 2019: Mr Kelly and Deirdre Clune for Fine Gael, Mr Kelleher for Fianna Fail, Ms O’Sullivan and Mr Wallace of Independents4Change. Of the 23 candidates in Ireland South, seven are independents and three are from new parties.

Race for final seat in Athlone (Roscommon)Whilst the poll-topping performance of Independent Cllr Emer Kelly was the main story of the Athlone Electoral Area of Roscommon County Council, there are still a lot of questions to answer as the count ticked on into Sunday tea time. The main issue to be resolved is the destination of the sixth and final seat, with Sinn Féin's Sam Brooks, Fianna Fáil's James Murray and Fine Gael Domnick Connolly the contenders. Already, Kelly, fellow independent Tony Ward and Fine Gael's John Naughten have been elected. Independent Laurence Fallon is likely to be elected in the third count, the results of which are due very shortly. It could be count seven or eight before we know the destination of that last seat.

Naas voted the county’s first Independent Ireland candidate, but voters went with the tried and tested in the Naas Local Electoral Area (LEA). Social Democrats Bill Clear topped the poll in the Naas LEA with 1,973 votes. I’m quite honoured that people did trust me and gave me that many votes. “You are selling your work for the last five years rather than what you can do,” she said of campaigning this time. You pay the penalty when you live to be an older age and the people who support you.

Spain loss will help Northern Ireland’s learning curve – Conor BradleyBy Ian Parker, PA, PalmaLiverpool star Conor Bradley believes Northern Ireland will learn from their 5-1 beating at the hands of Euro 2024-bound Spain as they look ahead to next year’s World Cup qualifiers. “We had a great start to the game,” Bradley said. “They are a world-class team and they will try and go and win the Euros and for us the game was a big learning curve. But Spain, who open their Euro 2024 campaign against Croatia next Saturday, would prove too strong for Michael O’Neill’s young side. “We knew before the game we weren’t going to have much of the ball,” Bradley said.
