Dr James Nayagam, chairman of Suriana Welfare Society, says a lot of incest cases go unreported because of the negative stigma. “I have come across incest victims as young as five years old during the pandemic. Concurring, civil and family law practitioner Amsa Naidu says some incest cases were unearthed during the movement control order. EMERGING as the country’s top scorer for a professional level examination came as a pleasant surprise for Lee Shou Cheng (pic) recently. CIMA had sent a letter to notify him of the win in April but the mail only reached him last month. I only needed to do extra reading for some areas and practise with CIMA materials,” he said in a press release. When studying for this professional examination, I challenged myself to surpass my limits and do better than I had ever done before. The CIMA A-Star Programme is a unique one-exam pathway for high achievers to become Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation holders.

THE weeks leading up to the June 21 deadline for the Olympic Games qualification were filled with many an anxious moment for me. Back then, apart from the Olympics, I was also secure with my European Tour card and I was swinging the club and hitting the ball really good. Fast forward one year... with a new date for the Tokyo Olympics set and the constant threat of Covid-19 hanging over our heads, it is a different ball game altogether. The Olympic golf venue, Kasumigaseki Country Club, is 72km away from the Olympic Village. At times like this, when the world and our country is experiencing great frustration casued by the pandemic, the Olympics can be a beacon of hope.

ASIA’S representation at this British Open, which is scheduled to come to an end today, was heavily depleted, following withdrawals. Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama missed out after he withdrew from the 149th Open Championship at Royal St George’s Golf Club in Kent, England, citing a positive Covid-19 test result. “I feel badly missing the Open and look forward to playing again at St Andrews next year. But what surprised some was that if this were the case, then all those players at Royal St George’s are “not preparing” for the Olympics. It is these traditions and the evolution of the game which are explored in the galleries of the R&A World Golf Museum.

SAINT EMILION, France -Tadej Pogacar was poised to win a second consecutive Tour de France title as the Slovenian retained his overall lead following the final time trial, a 30.8-km solo effort from Libourne on Saturday. The 22-year-old UAE Emirates rider finished eighth in the 20th stage won by Belgian Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), who clocked a best time of 35 minutes 53 seconds. Danes Kasper Asgreen and Jonas Vingegaard were second and third respectively in the 20th stage, 21 and 32 seconds off the pace. But well, it wasn't my fastest day on a bike and then the strongest rider won. The interior ministry said 137 marches took place across the country, gathering nearly 114,000 people, of which 18,000 were in Paris. The measures had already prompted smaller demonstrations earlier this week, forcing police to use tear gas to disperse protesters. Despite the strength of the protests, an Ipsos-Sopra Steria poll released on Friday found more than 60% of French people agree with mandatory vaccination for health workers, as well as a requirement for a health pass in some public places. We must adapt and face it", Castex told reporters in southwestern France, referring to the variant first identified in India. Some 55.5% of the French had had a single dose of a vaccine as of Saturday and 44.8% were fully inoculated.

LONDON (July 17): British health minister Sajid Javid on Saturday said he had tested positive for Covid-19, but added that his symptoms were mild and he was thankful to have had two doses of vaccine against the disease. Javid tweeted on March 17 that he had received a first shot of Oxford/AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine, posting a picture of him getting a second dose on May 16. Vaccines are not 100% effective at preventing infection, but fully vaccinated people are less likely to get seriously ill with Covid-19 even if they can test positive. Britain is facing a new wave of cases of Covid-19, but Johnson and Javid claim the vaccine programme has largely broken the link between Covid-19 cases and mortality, although Johnson has said that the country should reconcile itself to the prospect of more deaths from Covid-19. Britain has the seventh highest Covid-19 death toll in the world, and has fully vaccinated two-thirds of adults, although it is not vaccinating children.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia is evaluating whether to end COVID-19 restrictions on movement as planned or extend them, as the country battles with a surge of new infections and a crumbling economy, senior minister Luhut Pandjaitan said on Saturday. Fueled by the spread of the more virulent Delta variant, Indonesia has reported more new coronavirus cases than any country in the world, data from the latest seven-day average from a Reuters tracker showed. Southeast Asia's largest economy earlier this month slashed its full-year GDP outlook taking into account the restrictions. The country's finance minister Sri Mulyani told the conference that Indonesia will expand its COVID-19 recovery budget to 744.74 trillion rupiah ($51.38 billion) from 699.43 trillion rupiah. As Indonesia repeatedly reported record infections and COVID-19 deaths in recent weeks, health experts are calling the country Asia's new epicentre for the virus.

(Reuters) - With World Championship titles and the 400-metre hurdles world record in his possession, there is only one jewel left for Karsten Warholm to add to his athletics crown: Olympic gold. "You have to be at a world-record level to be able to compete for a gold medal in Tokyo," Warholm told reporters in the lead up to the Games. In front of an ecstatic, home crowd earlier this month, Warholm ran 46.70 seconds to break Kevin Young's 29-year-old world record by eight hundredths of a second. He described it as a relief after months of speculation over who could topple the longest-standing record in men's track. His chief rival, 23-year-old Benjamin poses perhaps the biggest threat, having nearly broken the 400m hurdles world record himself at the U.S. team trials last month, where he won the final in 46.83.

Deal value (total value of private equity investments) fell 26% year on year and contracted 16% versus the previous five-year average. Many general partners discovered in the midst of the pandemic that their portfolios were not sufficiently prepared to withstand and recover from sudden shocks. Bain & Company research shows more than 60% of general partners investing in the Asia-Pacific say they are willing to invest at least 5% of a portfolio company’s short-term profit to build long-term resilience. Close to one-third say their portfolio companies are still in the experimental or even earlier stages of building resilience capabilities into their strategy and operations. Asia-Pacific general partners cite three areas of portfolio risk that they worry about most: competitive position, balance-sheet risk and organisational agility.
