Fort McMurray residents keen for life to return to normal as they prepare to go home


Fort McMurray — Along Highway 63, the only access road to Fort McMurray, the hillside forest is striped with swaths of black and green. The first wave of residents will be allowed back to the least-damaged areas, including downtown Fort McMurray, Anzac, Fort McMurray 468 First Nation and Gregoire Lake Estates. Malano, her husband John and their children will return to their downtown Fort McMurray home as soon as possible, but aren’t sure what awaits them. He was evacuated from Fort McMurray, only to be evacuated again from the Suncor site north of town and then from Anzac and Conklin. After travelling in and out of Fort McMurray as an oilpatch worker, Langille moved here for good in January to work with the regional municipality.
