Questions over the future of UK-Israeli research ties have been raised amid the ongoing blockade of Gaza, which has already led to the European Union beginning a review into Israel’s participation in Horizon Europe. The UK has enjoyed close research links to Israel for many years, with a £20 million framework for developing academic and research and development ties agreed in March 2023. Since then, several UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) programmes have encouraged researchers from the two countries to work together, while UK-Israel research projects have received funding from the UK’s International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF), which also supports exchange placements for Israeli and UK academics. Concerns over jointly funded research projects involving Israel come after it emerged that Israeli defence firms have benefited from some of the 130 Horizon Europe projects involving Israeli researchers approved since the October 2023 attacks. “If you shut down research ties through boycotts then you also close down conversations with places that are a democratic space [for dissent],” continued Freedman.

Organiser Wannasee Ltd had previously said discussions were under way to preserve the festival after 10 of its other events, including Stone Valley North and Kubix, were cancelled at the end of May. But a social media post on Wednesday confirmed Northern Kin would not be going ahead, despite the team having worked "around the clock" to find a way to run it.

The report is colourless. It recognizes that the belief that “risk” can be avoided has led to a deplorable moral laxity among women who can certainly not be described as prostitutes. It urges self-control among the married, but the majority are fearful of condemning the use of contraceptives altogether. In his evidence before the committee, Dr. Gore describes the subject as “desperately difficult”, and we agree with the Times that it is not suitable for “dogmatic assertions”, particularly from doctors who are by no means all of one mind. Lord Dawson urges artificial methods.

One of the most senior figures in Reform U.K., Britain’s anti-immigration political party, unexpectedly resigned on Thursday after fresh infighting broke out within the insurgent political force led by Nigel Farage. The sudden departure of Zia Yusuf, Reform’s chairman, is a blow to the party, because he was responsible for the crucial task of helping the relatively new party build its structure. His resignation comes after Mr. Yusuf, a millionaire businessman who has described himself as “a British Muslim patriot,” criticized Reform’s newest member of Parliament, Sarah Pochin, who on Wednesday called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to ban the burqa. Mr. Yusuf, 38, characterized her comments as “dumb” because they did not align with the party’s official policy outlined at the last general election.
