Choosing the ten best golf clubs in the United Kingdom is easier than counting how many angels can dance on the head of a pin — but not by much. One that has an acclaimed, testing and beautiful golf course, often by the sea, over which many championships are staged, certainly. It is an out and back golf course, hard by the sea — although the sea is not visible from it. Overlooking the Firth of Forth and favoured by lawyers from Edinburgh, it is considered perhaps the fairest golf course in the UK. The Extinction Rebellion supporters broke the windows of News UK to highlight the role of The Sun and The Times newspapers in suppressing facts about the climate crisis, peddling an anti-climate action agenda and slowing the urgent action needed on the climate and nature crisis. [1]The action was planned carefully to take place on the hottest day ever in the UK, in the middle of an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures breaking the 40C barrier for the first time [2]. The Sun is a leading player in the fossil fuel industry backed campaign to delay action on climate change known as “climate delayism”. If urgent and radical action isn’t taken, we’re heading towards 4˚C warming, leading to societal collapse and mass loss of life. The younger generation, racially marginalised communities and the Global South are on the frontline.

As Prince Harry hits the headlines for the legal challenge over his security in the UK, one much younger royal quietly celebrates his birthday. Prince Archie, the eldest child of Harry and Meghan Markle, turns six today - marking five years since the Sussexes moved across the pond. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have chosen to keep Archie and Lilibet out of the spotlight since moving to the US. The line of pay and display meters stretches to the Hay Field from around the Reindeer Centre. Highland Council’s Glenmore parking meters are lined up ready for action and were causing plenty of double takes from motorists today as the glorious spring weather brought the visitors out. One of the biggest climbdowns was an end to a proposed ban on overnight parking at the new Pay and Display bays. Much of the Glenmore stretch of the Cairngorm ski road will be paid for parking with the rest of the route being designated as no waiting zones. The Pay and Display restrictions will be in force to the end of October.

"It's important to remember some of the poor devils who didn't make it like I did," 99-year-old Royal Air Force Veteran Dennis Bishop told AFP.The first act on a chilly Monday morning in London was the draping of two huge Union Jack flags on the Cenotaph war memorial that honours Britain's war dead. The usually bustling central London streets were deserted, except for The Mall outside Buckingham Palace, where hundreds of people set up camp with chairs and rugs. "It's so emotional to be here today. Eighty years of peace and peace of mind, I don't know if we understand what achievement it is. Where would we be without them?" "We owe a debt of gratitude to those prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for our country," Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote on X late Sunday.

Nottingham? The City of Edinburgh Council is introducing a five per cent visitor levy for overnight guests in paid accommodation from July next year. The whole city has a hidden network of caves beneath it, which have been in use since Roman times. Nottingham City Museums Service has just launched a £30 'adult rover ticket' under the pay-once-visit-all-year scheme, that enables holders to visit Nottingham Castle, Wollaton Hall and Newstead Abbey. I'm not sure taking from the tourists to subsidise the city would win approval from Nottingham’s most celebrated son.

Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, Louise Haigh is entirely correct that the government requires an economic reset (“Fight off Reform with higher taxes and spending, PM told”, news; “PM must show country what party stands for”, news, May 5). Voters understand that in order to bring about an improvement in public services and thus an improvement in their lives, the money has to come from somewhere. Sadly by boxing themselves in and vowing not to increase income tax, Sir Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves were forced to aim at the worst possible targets, pensioners and welfare recipients. The government should have the courage to admit these mistakes, restore those cuts and instead raise the level of income tax, particularly the higher rates. Rather than

Today, actor Timothy Spall repeated the war leader's words, as crowds of military personnel gathered on Parliament Square to commemorate VE Day 80. Their subsequent march to the Mall - where they were saluted by King Charles and other Royal Family members and veterans - kicked off four days of events across the UK. Brits even braved the slightly disappointing weather in some parts of the country, which failed to put a stop to bunting-clad tea parties - even Downing Street took part. A Red Arrows flypast was the headline of today's festivities, but there's more to look forward to over the rest of the week. Thursday - the anniversary of Churchill's declaration - will see members of the Royal Family attend a thanksgiving service at Westminster.
