Max Kim, Los Angeles Times (TNS)SEOUL, South Korea — You’d be hard pressed to find anyone here who had anticipated that Han Kang would be awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in literature, the world’s highest literary honor. “It used to be that Han Kang was known as Han Sung-won’s daughter, but now I’ve become Han Sung-won, the father of Han Kang,” he said in an interview in 2016. “I was so happy that I thought my heart would stop,” Kim Kil-ja, Moon’s mother, said of Han’s Nobel in an interview with local media. “Translations of Korean literature have long suffered from many obstacles, with more ‘pure’ translations failing to find success,” Jeong, the literary critic, said. “The field was greatly opened and more people were able to access Korean literature,” Yun said of Han’s global rise.

Israel’s yearlong military campaign in Gaza has hollowed out the Palestinian militant group Hamas and killed some of its top leaders. But the death of Yahya Sinwar this week deprived the group of its chief strategist and leading proponent of all-out war with Israel. The Israeli military’s top spokesman said in June that it would be impossible to totally destroy Hamas, a stated war aim of Netanyahu. “I don’t think that we will see any dramatic change in the policy of Hamas," said Michael Milshtein, a former Israeli military intelligence officer and commentator on Palestinian affairs. Without Sinwar, Hamas has lost its most credible leader, who commanded the respect of the group’s many factions throughout the West Bank, Gaza, and in the Palestinian diaspora.

Genocidal regime moves to prevent attempts to save the lives of its victimsImage: ICJPIsrael has banned six medical aid groups from entering Gaza, where they have been treating sick and injured Palestinians and to distribute vital medical supplies. The six medical humanitarian groups, whose emergency medical missions in Gaza have treated over 15,000 patients since October last year have been told that they will no longer be allowed into the besieged territory. COGAT did not provide any information on its claimed reasons for ordering a halt to life-saving medical missions. These organisations have, collectively, sent hundreds of medical delegates to provide life-saving aid to sick and injured Palestinians in Gaza over the past twelve months. There are currently heightened concerns regarding medical aid provisions, due to Israel’s reported ‘General’s plan’, which is designed to implement siege tactics to restrict aid reaching Palestinians in northern Gaza.

California Faces Wildfire Threats Amid Wind And Power Outages Utility companies shut off power as Diablo winds ignite fears of destructive wildfiresCalifornia is once again facing perilous conditions as wildfires threaten communities across the state, stirring fear among residents and prompting precautionary measures from utility companies. Officials reported aggressive firefighting efforts were able to curb the advance of the fire, and miraculously, no injuries were reported. Hot and dry fall winds, particularly the Diablo winds, significantly raise the risk of wildfires. Meteorologists have gone so far as to classify these conditions as potentially the most significant wind event of the year so far. Adding to the tension, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) initiated power shutoffs across twelve counties, affecting around 20,000 customers.
