A 911 caller found his friend’s body and thought he was the victim of a bear attack. Police now say it was a homicide
He had made plans to meet a friend the next day for a weekend of camping and other outdoor activities. On Saturday morning, the friend called 911 and said he’d found Kjersem’s bloodied body in a tent about two-and-a-half miles up Moose Creek Road, east of Big Sky. He told the dispatcher that Kjersem appeared to be a victim of a bear attack. Kjersem’s friend, who authorities did not identify, told them he found his body around 10 a.m. Saturday. In July, a 72-year-old man fatally shot a grizzly bear that attacked him while he was picking huckleberries near Glacier National Park.

Kamala Harris’ sit-down with Fox News was more sparring match than interview
Vice President Kamala Harris’ sit-down with Fox News’ Bret Baier wasn’t an interview; it was a competition. Harris’ goal seemed to be making it through the 30-minute conversation without meandering too often into nondescript word salad answers. That Baier treated Trump’s remark Wednesday morning as believable and an appropriate counter to Harris’ statement is journalistic malpractice. But compare the intensity of his questioning and fact-checking of Harris against the interview Baier conducted with Trump in June 2023. When Harris noted that former Trump administration officials have said Trump is unfit for office, Baier basically acted like a Trump campaign surrogate.

Fox News said no employee of or freelancer for the network penned jokes for former president Donald Trump‘s speech at Thursday night’s Al Smith Dinner fundraiser — contrary to claims Trump made on the network’s air Friday morning. “Fox News confirmed that no employee or freelancer wrote the jokes” for Trump, a spokesperson for the network said in a statement to Variety. At the Al Smith event, Trump’s speech included jabs at VP Kamala Harris (such as “She’s in Michigan receiving communion from Gretchen Whitmer“ — and Minnesota Gov. Harris did not attend the Al Smith Dinner but her campaign provided a video clip shown to attendees, featuring “Saturday Night Live” former cast member Molly Shannon reprising her role as Mary Katherine Gallagher. The Al Smith Dinner, an annual event in New York City that has historically been attended by U.S. presidential nominees, raises money for Catholic charities in the Archdiocese of New York.

More than 2,000 Kaiser mental health professionals could go on strike Monday
Emily Alpert Reyes, Los Angeles Times (TNS)LOS ANGELES — More than 2,000 unionized psychologists, therapists and other mental health professionals at Kaiser Permanente in Southern California are preparing to strike Monday amid complaints that the massive system has failed to address problems with how it provides mental health care. The planned walkout falls one year after Kaiser reached a sweeping settlement with California regulators, who faulted it for failing to ensure timely access to mental health care. Under the agreement, Kaiser acknowledged it didn’t have enough mental health care providers, which “resulted in excessive wait times” for therapy. The health care organization says that in recent years, it has invested more than $1 billion in mental health, expanding its Southern California mental health workforce by more than 30% in four years. The clash comes two years after Kaiser mental health therapists in Northern California went on strike for 10 weeks.

Tesla self-driving crash reports prompt NHTSA investigation
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature after receiving reports of four crashes, one of which caused a pedestrian fatality. According to NHTSA, the FSD system's engineering controls failed to "react appropriately to reduced roadway visibility conditions." NHTSA states that the crashes occurred in "reduced roadway visibility" that "arose from conditions such as sun glare, fog, or airborne dust" while the vehicles' FSD mode was engaged.
