The National government will send federal, navy and military police to Rosario, Santa Fe, to help local forces combat a spike in homicides linked to organized crime after four people were murdered in the past week. President Javier Milei and Security Minister Patricia Bullrich created a Crisis Committee at the request of Santa Fe governor Maximiliano Pullaro to respond to the spike in violence in the city. In recent years, homicides in Rosario have skyrocketed as a product of organized crime and the drug trade. The message said gangs from around the city are now united in a “war” against governor Maximiliano Pullaro and local Security Minister Pablo Cococcioni to demand the authorities let them see their families. In text released with the image, the authorities promised that matters would “get worse” for the inmates.

CarpetazoAs with all of today’s translation troubles, this one came up in newsroom conversation. The word carpeta means folder and gave rise to a lunfardo verb carpetear, meaning to spy on someone (kind of like the origins of keeping tabs on people). As a fun aside, unripe eggplants are white and round and look remarkably egg-like (and there’s also a white variety). For the sake of diplomacy and continued translation fun I won’t be stepping into either figurative vegetable patch, thank you very much. The Milei administration and the provincial governors are ready to move forward with the discussion of a new omnibus bill, Interior Minister Guillermo Francos said on Friday in a press conference following a four-hour meeting at Casa Rosada. Both governors showed their support for a new omnibus bill and their openness to working with the federal government. Frigerio also welcomed the issues Milei listed as part of the “May pact,” saying there were a good guiding pont. The Milei administration presented the original omnibus bill, a massive, 351-page-long, 664-article project aimed at deeply reforming the Argentine state, in late December. The interior minister said that the government will look to present a bill addressing both topics in the coming weeks.

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández was found guilty on Friday of drug trafficking conspiracy by a U.S. jury, cementing the onetime U.S. ally’s fall from grace. He had pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking conspiracy and criminal weapons possession charges. At the trial, several convicted traffickers testified they had bribed Hernández. Prosecutors said Hernández used drug cash to bribe officials to manipulate voting results in his favor during Honduras’ 2013 and 2017 presidential elections. “I had a policy against all those people because I could not stand them,” Hernández said of drug traffickers.

Source: FEIM study on child marriage in Argentina, based on 2010 national census data. It is most common in northeastern Argentina, affecting 7.2% of girls aged 14-18 in Misiones province, 6.9% in Chaco, and 6.4% in Formosa, the study found. Under Argentine law, girls cannot marry until they turn 18 unless they have the permission of their parents or a judge. In most cases, these girls are living with partners in what FEIM calls child unions. In February, with support from the Embassy of the Netherlands in Argentina, FEIM presented an art installation called “the pink house” in the University of Buenos Aires law faculty.

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has extended a state of emergency in the South American country by 30 days as his administration grapples with rising violence blamed on drug trafficking gangs. Noboa, the 36-year-old son of one of the country’s richest businessmen, has designated 22 gangs as terrorist groups. During the state of emergency, intentional homicides have been halved – falling from an average of 24 a day to 12 a day – the decree said. Fourteen alleged criminals have died during operations and 3,300 arms and 64.3 tonnes of drugs have been seized, it said. States of emergency were frequently used by Noboa’s predecessor, Guillermo Lasso, to try and tackle rising violence on the streets and in prisons, but to little effect.

In a move seemingly meant to tone down its conflict with provincial leaders over federal tax shares, the Milei administration announced on Thursday that it will provide provinces with additional funding for education. Although the law that regulates educational funding and contains said provision has already expired, the specific article regarding shareable taxes has been renewed over the years in order to guarantee funding for education. “The specific assignment of shareable resources is intended to raise the educational budget for the provinces and BA City. A couple weeks ago, Chubut Governor Ignacio Torres (PRO) said he would stop delivering oil and gas to the rest of the country unless his province received its share of federal tax funds. Last week, Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof announced he would take the Milei administration to the Supreme Court to demand that federal tax funding be restored to the province.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva sent a bill to congress on Monday to regulate labor rights of workers from ride-hailing apps in the country, which includes the need to pay a minimum wage. The proposal, which might affect ride-hailing companies such as Uber and Chinese Didi’s 99, must be approved by the Senate and Lower House to become a law. Uber said in a statement it sees the bill as “an important milestone towards balanced regulation of work intermediated by platforms.”. The bill also proposes to give ride-hailing workers rights such as a public pension and maternity benefits, in exchange for a social security contribution to be paid part by companies and part by the workers. However, it follows recent courts decisions in the country on not determining the ride-hailing workers as employees.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump praised President Javier Milei’s austerity measures and said he “loved” him during a campaign speech in Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday — although he did not mention Argentina’s libertarian leader by name. Even Argentina, they went MAGA, you know Argentina, great guy,” Trump told the crowd at the rally. He loves Trump, I love him, because he loves Trump. Milei addressed Trump as “president” and said he was “very generous” for mentioning him in his speech. If he wins against President Joe Biden, he would take office in January 2025, meaning that he would overlap with Milei’s presidential term by three years.

Twelve governors backed President Javier Milei’s proposal to sign a political pact amid unprecedented political tensions over the national government cutting funds for the provinces. Milei ultimately sent Torres the money his administration owed Chubut on Wednesday following a court order issued by the provincial judiciary. In a post on X after Milei’s speech, Torres wrote he “celebrates and agrees” with Milei’s pact proposal. Como lo dije en la apertura de sesiones, confío en que somos capaces de generar un canal de diálogo y de acuerdos entre las Provincias y la Nación, como lo hemos hecho con los intendentes de nuestra provincia.
