Three officers of the Directorate of Government Accommodation have been suspended over allegations of corruption, irregularities, and bribery in the allocation of state housing. A Dhaka court has ordered a Tejgaon College teacher to jail in a case accusing him of leading a procession of the Awami League, banned from conducting political activities, and detonating improvised bombs earlier this month. Prof SM Ashraful Alam Askor, 60, head of the Bangla Department at Tejgaon College, was denied bail by Metropolitan Magistrate Najmin Akter on Friday. The case stems from events on Sept 7, when the Awami League staged a flash procession in the Parliament area. Police allege that two crude bombs were detonated during the rally “to destabilise the state and create panic among the public”. The complaint further notes that leaders and activists of the Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League and other affiliates carried banners as they marched in front of Park Town Restaurant in Manipuripara.

A Bangladeshi expatriate has died after being stabbing in Chattogram’s Patiya. Md Mamun, 24, succumbed to his wounds while receiving treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital early on Friday morning. Md Nuruzzaman, chief of Patiya Police Station, said that law enforcers have learnt that a man had stabbed Mamun in the Dengapara area on Thursday night, although the motive remains unknown. “His family members took him to CMC Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment early in the morning.”The family had not officially reported incident to the police, Nuruzzaman added. Joint security forces have rescued 66 people, including children, who had reportedly gathered in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf Upazila to be smuggled to Malaysia by sea. The operation was carried out on Thursday night in a hilly area adjacent to Kachhapia in Baharchhara Union, according to Lt Commander Siam ul Haque, media officer of the Bangladesh Coast Guard Headquarters. A joint team of the Bangladesh Coast Guard and the Bangladesh Navy then conducted a raid. The Bangladesh Coast Guard is working to identify the traffickers involved in the incident, Siam said. He added that legal action is being taken at the Teknaf Police Station to reunite the rescued people with their families.

Homna Police Station Sub-Inspector Tapas Kumar Sarkar, who lodged the case on Thursday night, said the case lists between 2,000 and 2,200 unnamed suspects, reports bdnews24.com. The unrest broke out on Thursday afternoon in Homna‍‍`s Asadpur village after announcements were made over loudspeakers, accusing a man of blasphemy. Crowds subsequently went on to vandalise and set fire to four shrines. Police said 35-year-old Md Mohsin had been arrested on charges of blasphemy.
