Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday said his party would develop satellite cities outside Dhaka to ease the capital’s chronic traffic congestion, blaming over centralization of roads, public transport, and employment. “Road design, transport systems, and jobs are centered around Dhaka,” he said, adding that satellite towns outside the capital would help address the problem. Auto-rickshaw drivers blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar for about one and a half hours on Saturday, demanding the withdrawal of fines and removal of restriction on their movement. Locals said slow-moving auto-rickshaws have long been operating on Dhaka-Aricha highway despite restrictions, which has led to a rise in accidents. Following complaints from locals, Savar Highway Police began enforcing rules and fined drivers Tk 26 each for violations. Police from Savar Model Police Station reached the spot around 12:30 pm and called the drivers for talks. A total of 24 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country in the last 24 hours, while no death was reported during the period. According to the release, among the newly admitted patients, seven were hospitalized in the Barishal division (outside city corporation areas), five in the Chattogram division (outside city corporation areas), four in the Dhaka division (outside city corporation areas), one in Dhaka North City Corporation, five in Dhaka South City Corporation and two in the Rajshahi division (outside city corporation areas). During the same period, 36 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals. With this, the total number of dengue patients discharged from hospitals this year rose to 779. Last year, a total of 102,861 dengue cases were reported, with 413 deaths and in 2024, dengue infected 101,214 people and claimed 575 lives.

The 11th death anniversary of Arafat Rahman Koko, the youngest son of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam and former BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, is today. Arafat Rahman Koko, a noted sports organizer and younger brother of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, passed away on January 24, 2015 in Malaysia. According to jail authorities, all the 129 inmates have completed the online voter registration process, said Jailer Abid Ahmed of Jashore Central Jail. Sources at the jail said many inmates initially showed interest after getting informed about postal ballot opportunities.
