“We are a very high-performing organisation,” a senior executive of Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) told the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in December. “We punch well above our weight.”The executive was speaking about the organisation’s work in fisheries and environmental protection. The case highlighted concerns about allegations made under protected disclosures being “weaponised” and revealed allegations about the actions of politicians in relation to such claims. The department told the PAC in January an independent report on complaints by a whistleblower had been referred to the Garda Commissioner. O’Donnell is claiming he was unfairly dismissed by IFI and penalised for making protected disclosures.

In the meantime, the vulnerability of the global economy to energy prices will be tested. Imported oil is the single largest energy source in the country for transport, cars and trucks; oil makes up 93 per cent of transport energy. Indeed, disruption to gas rather than oil might hit Europe most dramatically. This week alone, European gas prices surged by 45 per cent because EU gas storage is critically low. Meanwhile, the price of food is in part determined by the price of fertiliser, and modern fertiliser comes from chemicals, underpinned by oil prices.

Any increase in wholesale gas prices will affect electricity bills, according to Daragh Cassidy of bonkers.ie. As a result, any increase in wholesale prices usually takes several weeks, if not months, to feed through into higher household bills. He said a sustained 50 per cent increase in wholesale gas prices might translate into a 20-25 per cent increase in domestic bills, amounting to about €600 a year. The average Irish motorist drives 17,000km a year, so a 10 cent increase would add about €130 to the annual cost of motoring. Prices could continue to climb if the conflict deepens and the impact on global oil prices worsens.

Luckily, the kitchen in this Granary Wharf apartment faces the ‘back’ of the property and not out over the water. The living room’s big double doors and window will let you keep track of it all with your feet up and binoculars — or an easel — to hand. The double doors open out onto a large patio area. “You’re right on the water front here, and there are magnificent harbour views,” says Trevor O’Sullivan of Lisney SIR. Both bedrooms are doubles and the main one also has patio access via double doors.

FA Cup: Mansfield 1 Arsenal 2Eberechi Eze’s thumping strike saw Arsenal survive a scare at Mansfield as Mikel Arteta’s men reached the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 win that keeps their quadruple hopes alive. However, the spirited Stags’ memorable FA Cup journey and hopes of an almighty shock would be ended by the man who scored when Crystal Palace won the competition last season. Marli Salmon among the starters on a day when fellow 16-year-old Max Dowman became Arsenal’s youngest ever FA Cup player and was denied by an early Liam Roberts save at a sold-out One Call Stadium. Cristhian Mosquera saw an effort deflect over moments later, but Mansfield responded well against an Arsenal side looking uncomfortable in an unfamiliar back three. Jaden Dixon came on for debut in place of seemingly injured Riccardo Calafiori and Dowman was replaced by star Bukayo Saka, who was denied superbly by Liam Roberts.

US President Donald Trump has said that Iran 'will be hit very hard' today and dubbed the country the 'loser of the Middle East', after Dubai Airport was evacuated following an Iranian drone attack. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump hit out at Iran's President Masoud Pezeshki, who earlier claimed that attacks against its Gulf neighbours would stop - only to be contradicted by Iran's Revolutionary Guards hours later. Elsewhere, it was reported today that the UK has halved the readiness time for aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales ahead of a possible deployment to the region. The comments came as intense Iranian fire targeted the Gulf Arab states on Saturday morning as Israel and the United States kept up their air strikes targeting the Islamic Republic. There were repeated attacks on Saturday morning on Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
