Prosecutors said 14 people received lesser sentences in the case that involved a total of 33 defendants, state media reported on Tuesday. They said the ISIS members had resorted to “violence and armed operations in Sabratha and its surroundings”. ISIS and other armed groups proliferated in Libya after the fall of Muammar Qaddafi in a Nato-backed uprising that led to his removal and death in 2011. Analysts said divisions and rivalries between governments in the east and west had created an environment ripe for such armed groups to fester. Group trials against suspected ISIS members are also continuing in Libya, with the verdicts often resulting in death sentences.

TUNIS: Tunisian police have arrested former prime minister Ali Larayedh, his far-right Ennahdha party said Tuesday, accusing authorities of trying to divert attention from calls for President Kais Saied to quit. The arrest of the Ennahdha number two comes just days after nearly 90 percent of voters boycotted an election to a toothless new parliament established by Saied following his seizure of sweeping powers in 2021. Ennahdha, which like almost all Tunisian parties boycotted the vote, accused Saied’s government of “systematically targeting” its leadership. Chebbi’s National Salvation Front, which includes Ennahdha, had said the slim election turnout should be a cue for Saied to step down. But Saied hit back at his critics Monday, noting that some of them had criminal charges hanging over them, a veiled reference to investigations into Ennahdha officials.

The Libyan Justice Minister, Khaled Masoud, said Fathi Bashagha’s government is to form a team of lawyers to defend Abu Agila al-Marimi, who was extradited to the United States for alleged involvement in the 1988-Lockerbie bombing. The Minister added, in an interview with Sputnik, “Despite our full belief that this person is innocent and his name was not mentioned during the Lockerbie investigations, the government will form a team of lawyers to defend him.”He announced the Libyan government’s strong condemnation of what the US had done to arrest a Libyan person who enjoys all rights inside his country, and to detain him in this way and put him on trial without referring to the Libyan state. The Minister of Justice confirmed that the Lockerbie case was settled legally and with international auspices, and that there were no longer any obligations on the Libyan side. Masoud stated that the mandate of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh government was expired, and what it had done (Marimi’s extradition) was contrary to international agreements, covenants and norms. He indicated that they are in the process of preparing a complete legal memorandum and referring it to Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha to address the competent authorities, and to empower the al-Marimi’s defense team.
