The sharp increase in rent in the second quarter (April to June), which took the median rent for newly tenanted properties in the Auckland Region to $630 a week, came after an extended period in which rents in the region had remained relatively flat. Between the fourth quarter (Q4) 2021 and Q1 2023, the median rent in Auckland bounced around between $590 and $600 a week, followed by the sudden jump to $630 a week in the second quarter of the year. The big increase in Auckland rents in the second quarter was particularly significant because the national increase was just $5 a week. (See the table below for the quarterly and annual median rent movements in all major urban districts). A sudden jump in population will inevitably have an effect on demand for housing which will feed through to rents.

But minister David Parker says Mr Brown simply does not know the process and his comments show how unfit National is for office. Mr Brown said the stance taken by the transport agency shed light on a significant shift in the agency priorities under Labour. "Instead of focusing on improving connectivity in our regions, NZTA is opposing crucial residential development sites because motorists are choosing to drive their own private vehicles," he said. Mr Parker said, when contacted, he could not comment on what was an operational matter. He said Mr Brown should know that and the fact he did not showed the level National was at.

As the party increasingly courts the so-called “freedom movement”, the digital footprint of some of its could-be parliamentarians may cause headaches. NZF has cut its deal with the Devil by signing up to the anti-science anti-Vaxx feral Voices for Freedom electorate and I think it will provoke people to make a stance against NZ First on basic principle. I think this lurch to an anti-science anti-Vaxx feral Voices for Freedom Party will bring the froth from the sub 5% catacombs, but for people with basic education it will feel like having sex with your cousin. Now voters know that NZ First are actively chasing the anti-science anti-Vaxx feral Voices for Freedom electorate, I think there will be genuine pull back. Allowing the anti-science anti-Vaxx feral Voices for Freedom electorate into Parliament is like allowing MAGA into the Republicans.
