Niall Robertson, BalmoralScience not voodooIt’s a little disturbing that Dr Tara McAllister can use the term “Western Science”. Science is simply science. But to say that belief is on a par with science is simply incorrect. We have always needed a Ministry of Works (MoW) tasked with, among other things, the design and maintenance of public structures.

She holds the crown as the longest-serving actress in the same role in Australia, but veteran star Lynne McGranger has revealed how she is planning on leaving Home and Away. The actress, who has played Irene Roberts on the iconic soap for 30 years, has detailed how she would like to exit the soap - and she hopes to do it with a bang. While she's stolen the hearts of the nation with her portrayal of the motherly figure, 70-year-old Lynne wants her exit from the show to be dramatic. 'I want to go with the biggest bang, the most dramatic exit,' she told Stuff.co.nz. Asked about her heroes in life, Lynne said there are so many, but said that one has to be Johnny Ruffo, who played Chris Harrington on Home And Away.

A great white shark has been spotted near the location of Aotearoa’s last fatal shark attack at Waihī Beach. The shark appeared just offshore of Alderman Island near Tairua, shark scientist Riley Elliot said. The shark, previously tagged by Elliot, had travelled around the top of the north island to 90 Mile Beach, and was now in Coromandel . A coroner’s investigation into Marlow’s tragic death, released in 2022, recommended more research on sharks into the number of great white sharks in New Zealand waters, and the provision of drone technology for surf lifeguards. Christel Yardley/Stuff Waihi Beach and Bowentown has had an increase of shark sightings over the last summers.

Canada boasts plenty of world-class restaurants, but you don’t need to splash out to try unique cuisine. As Vic Naughton, the general manager of Air Canada for New Zealand/Australia suggests, there are plenty of fun, tasty and quirky treats available everywhere. If there is one item people associate with Canada it’s maple syrup. Quebec produces the majority of the world’s maple syrup and if you are there in winter make sure you try some maple taffy, created by pouring boiling hot syrup straight into clean snow. One drink I’d recommend trying is the Caesar, a legendary Canadian cocktail created by mixing vodka with a savoury concoction called Mott's Clamato Juice.

Coal was known in Golden Bay and copper and chromite occurred in the Nelson “mineral belt”. Aorere Gold hastened the development of Golden Bay helping to pay for roads, schools and libraries. Although the rush subsided after little more than a year a small population of miners continued to obtain gold in Golden Bay.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has already lifted the official cash rate to 4.75%, which is among the most aggressive tightening in the developed world. ANZ’s economics team believes the RBNZ will hike the cash rate another 0.5% to a peak of 5.25%, and then keep it at this level through 2024. “The interplay between services and wage inflation means that for this component of inflation to ease, we need to see demand and supply in the labour market become better aligned”. Accordingly, ANZ believes “the evolution of labour market pressures over 2023 will be key for understanding the likely path of interest rates over the next few years”. This points to inflation remaining higher for longer.

There was a slight decrease in activity at the residential property auctions monitored by interest.co.nz over the last week (4-10 March). Interest.co.nz monitored the auctions of 268 residential auctions around the country, down from 293 the previous week. Of those, 84 were sold under the hammer, giving an overall sales rate of 31%, down from 37% the previous week. The main reason for the decline in total auction numbers was fewer auctions in Canterbury and several provincial centres compared to the previous week, while auction activity was up slightly in Auckland. At the major auctions prices appear to have been firmest in Christchurch and weakest in Auckland's central suburbs.

National's childcare policy is clever and just about fireproof. He didn't think that up on the spur of the moment. In Johnsonville, Wellington, it was $402 a week while in Kaitaia the average was $268.75 a week. Private consultants working on the merger were on contracts worth up to nearly $9000 a week, with the average nearly $6000 a week. He didn't think a select committee inquiry was the way to go.
