1100% hike in gas prices compared to the previous year is news of tough winters ahead. This hike, being a major contributor to over 40% increase in short-term inflation, reflects poorly on the management and mitigation of the adverse effects on millions of households. Policies of increasing prices of essential commodities, fuel, and gas must be deliberated extensively before implementation. A 10% jump in the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) compared to last week indicates a lack of such thoughtfulness. People should get maximum relief and frequent price hikes must be avoided at all costs.

The crisis-ridden steel industry in Pakistan has urged the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to lower interest rates in the upcoming Monetary Policy meeting to help it overcome “existential crisis”. As it stands, the SBP's key interest rate is at a staggering 22%, a level not witnessed since early 2011. This interest rate surpasses those of many other countries, rendering Pakistan's domestic steel industry uncompetitive. While Pakistan's central bank maintains an interest rate of 22% for industries, the other regional countries enjoy significantly lower rates. The harsh reality of these interest rates makes it nearly impossible for the Pakistan’s steel industry to secure credit from financial institutions.

A significant number of people in Pakistan are choosing to migrate to other countries in search of better opportunities. This trend reflects the country’s shortcomings in providing for its citizens. The prevalent poverty and various challenges drive individuals to seek a more comfortable life abroad. Moreover, around 40 percent of the population in Pakistan grapples with poverty and confronts multiple hardships. The government must address the citizens’ needs adequately to discourage migration and encourage a prosperous life within the country.

Many people have died and many more have been injured in tragic accidents on the highway linking Thatta and Hyderabad. There is only one rural health centre across the stretch of the highway, and even that is suffering from a lack of first aid and ambulance facilities. The victims have to be transported in police vans whenever they are available. The local administration should expand this road, install solar lights, and provide first aid and ambulance services at the local health centre. SHOAIR ALI QURESHITHATTA

That being said, in the 21st century the pace of life rarely gives us a chance to sit back and think about some of the big questions. These are the questions that go to the very heart of our existence. While we are all so caught up in day-to-day living and struggling with the economic crisis that we are facing, we still need to think about the big questions and the meaning of life. Think about it — what is it that you really, really want. Take time to think about these things — once you have worked out the big issues only then will your life have real meaning.

A country’s economic development depends on a few major agendas. In Pakistan, 70 percent of graduates and PhD holders are unemployed because we are acquiring education without understanding its practical application. However, there have been individuals who sacrificed their lives for the nation and future generations, such as Quaid-e-Azam, Liaquat Ali Khan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Akbar Bugti, and Imran Khan, who refused to be slaves, and we know the tragic endings of their stories. Pakistan remains an underdeveloped country due to its corrupt political system, which is eroding the foundations of rights. While history marks August 14th as the day Pakistan gained freedom, some argue it was the day we entered a different kind of prison.
