International alarm has grown in recent months over internet scams in the region often staffed by trafficking victims tricked or coerced into promoting bogus crypto investments. Sabino said the victims were forced to target unsuspecting people in the United States, Europe and Canada. At least 12 suspected ringleaders of the scheme have been arrested and are set to be charged with human trafficking. A Philippine immigration official also warned on Saturday against trafficking risks while international events are underway. The immigration bureau said Philippine sports officials were asked to warn Filipino athletes of the "risks of trafficking" in the country.

A driver was arrested for manslaughter after a security guard was found dead in a Sha Tin carpark early Sunday. A 69-year-old security guard, surnamed Yuen, was found lying in the Jat Min Chuen carpark at 12.39 am. Officers said Yuen was seen arguing with a private car driver over the parking toll and had a physical altercation. It is learned that the enraged driver once punched Yuen in his face, and Yuen was later found lying unconscious in the booth. The police searched the involved sedan, which was still at the site of the incident, and seized two grams of cannabis.

An 82-year-old woman was hospitalized as her stove exploded, blew one of the windows out of the flat, and caused a fire in North Point early Saturday morning. The incident occurred at around 5.42 am on the 20/F at Cheong Shing Mansion when the elderly woman named Lam was starting the stove to cook. The stove exploded the moment Lam started the stove, and she was immediately covered in flour. Lam was sent to Ruttonjee Hospital and was later transferred to Queen Mary Hospital. Police later seized a fallen window on the building’s podium on the second floor, the frame of which was already deformed.
