Those convicted of certain criminal offences are now ineligible to serve on a school board unless an exemption is approved, following the passing of the third reading of the Education and Training Amendment Bill. Education Minister Jan Tinetti said that would give staff, students, and the school community “more confidence that board members are suitable for the role”. The Bill passing also means Aotearoa’s three wānanga are now able to self-determine how they operate. SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff The Bill creates a new framework for Aotearoa’s three current wānanga – Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, Te Wānanga o Raukawa, and Te Whare o Wānanga Awanuiārangi. An extension of time for elect student representatives also aimed to increase participation in school board elections.
