The Ethiopian government has proposed to include Amharic among the official languages recognized by the African Union (AU). A former ambassador to the United Nations, Selassie previously served as Ethiopia's ambassador to Egypt. Last August, violent fighting broke out in the Amhara region between the regional "Fano" militias and federal troops, following the refusal of the Amhara militias to disband and integrate the ranks of the federal army as required by the Pretoria peace agreement. The condition was one of the prerequisites for the end of the war in Tigray, which lasted from the end of 2020 to the end of 2022, during which the Amhara militias supported Prime Minister Ahmed's army.
