Removing video technology from Scottish football is not as easy as flicking a switch on a wall and cutting the power. Far from delivering clarity, many feel that video technology has muddied the waters further. Before 2022, research showed that about 92 per cent of the decisions made by officials in Scotland were right and fair. The lines drawn up for “factual” offside decisions in Scotland struggle, at times, to look terribly factual at all. While semi-automated offside technology such as that utilised in England and at this summer’s World Cup offers precision, it remains prohibitively expensive for clubs in Scotland.
