The National Assembly is the country's top legislative body, but serves mainly to ratify decisions by the ruling Communist Party. Elderly voters, well-dressed in suits or traditional costumes, were some of the first to cast their ballots at polling stations. The President, Prime Minister, and head of the national Assembly will all be confirmed by lawmakers' votes. Most polling stations were due to close at 7:00 p.m. (1200 GMT), with results not expected for at least a week.
