The spokesman for the Ministry of Transportation in the Tripoli-based Libyan government, Siraj al-Hamal, confirmed in an exclusive interview with Libya Herald that the government recommended during its Cabinet meeting in the city of Ghadames (last Thursday) the development of the Debdeb Ghadames border crossing with Algeria before reopening it to passengers and goods in both directions. Debdeb to be reopened after agreed security requirementsRegarding the Ghadames Debdeb border crossing, Al-Hamal confirmed that work is underway to reopen the crossing after developing and equipping it according to the security requirements approved in Libya and Algeria, and after coordination with the Algerian crossing authorities to open the borders in both directions. The reopening will have a positive impact on the economy of the two countries by reducing the time taken to transport goods from Algeria through Tunisia and from there to Libya and vice versa. Well-equipped service facilities to be establishedAl-Hamal noted the readiness of the general plan for the modern Ghadames land port, which the Organisation for the Development of Administrative Centers (ODAC) was assigned to implement. The new crossing and its facilities are to become a more civilized interface for the Libyan state in its far western borders with Algeria, as well as to meet the needs of the traveller by land in terms of integrated services provided by well-equipped service facilities.
