Two asylum seekers who were onboard an unseaworthy boat will be brought to Malta after they were rescued by a merchant vessel. At all times, the Maltese and Libyan authorities had been kept informed. Some of the individuals were transferred to one of the merchant vessels by early dawn, the Italian coastguard said, adding that the boat capsized whilst the asylum seekers were being rescued. The merchant vessel will first stop in Malta to disembark two individuals who require medical assistance while the rest will be brought to Italy. It was also highlighted by the Italian authorities that the rescue took place outside its SAR area, adding that the Libyan coastguard had been inactive.
