Legal disputes and political stalemates led to the stalling of presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya last year. The head of the United Nations mission in Libya (UNSMIL) visits the UN headquarters following a “5+5” meeting held by the Libyan Joint Military Commission (JMC), during which he discussed the removal of foreign mercenaries with representatives Sudan, Chad and Niger, all sources of foreign fighters in Libya. Bathily is expected to encourage the UN Security Council to facilitate and sustain a ceasefire agreement as UNSMIL continues efforts to unify security institutions before elections are set. UN-backed dialogues between the House of Representatives, based in the east, and the High State Council, based in the western city of Tripoli, will also be a key component of resolving disputes and getting the Libyan peace process back on track.
