The speaker of Iran’s parliament, employing a bit of hyperbole, said Israel’s failure to intercept missiles in highly protected Dimona represented a turning point. Israeli officials insist their air defenses are performing as well as can be expected. But there isn’t any system that is 100 percent effective, Israeli military officials said. The top level of Israel’s air defense network, the Arrow 3, is designed to intercept missiles outside the atmosphere. Still, “there is no such thing as 100 percent hermetic defense.”Shachar Shohat, a former commander of the IDF air defense array, said the better-than-90-percent success rate of Israel’s air defense efforts is very high, well beyond what was estimated or expected.

Though the 24th Amendment had abolished poll taxes for federal elections, it left state and local elections untouched. Congress is considering the Save America Act, a Republican-backed bill mandating that every voter provide in-person proof of citizenship and an appropriate photo identification to access the ballot box. Once implemented, poll taxes also disenfranchised poor and working-class White voters. In Virginia, it denied about half of White voters the right to vote, an effect that experts warn the Save America Act will replicate. The Save America Act, like Virginia’s poll tax, is designed to do the former.

Attorneys for the Fed and the U.S. attorney’s office in D.C. battled over the legality of two grand jury subpoenas at the center of the investigation during a sealed hearing March 3. Prosecutors are weighing whether the cost overruns amount to fraud and whether Powell gave false testimony to the Senate Banking Committee. A spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office said Tuesday that the purpose of a grand jury investigation is to determine whether there is probable cause that a crime was committed. The U.S. attorney’s office also submitted a filing asking Boasberg to reconsider his ruling. Powell, in turn, has pledged to keep serving as Fed chair on an acting basis until a new chair is confirmed.

“I don’t want to comment until I see the deal, but as you know, they’re negotiating a deal,” Trump told reporters Tuesday in the Oval Office. “I don’t think we want to cut off Homeland Security Investigations.”The House would also need to pass any deal that Senate Republicans strike with Democrats. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) may need Democrats to pass any DHS funding legislation because House Republicans have a perilously narrow majority. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) would not say Tuesday whether House Democrats support the Republican proposal, telling reporters that he plans to speak with Schumer. Sen. Lindsey Graham (South Carolina), one of the Republicans who met with Trump at the White House on Monday, said he thought Trump would ultimately support Senate Republicans’ proposal.

Prediction markets are Washington’s latest bogeyman, but President Donald Trump isn’t spooked. After the July 2024 attempt to assassinate Trump, traders immediately integrated the news into the Republican’s odds, increasing his chances. Polling data, by contrast, “did not react similarly” and “consistently hovered around a 45% chance.”The election wasn’t an aberration, either. But the urge to regulate — typified by Arizona’s attorney general filing criminal charges against prediction market Kalshi last week — misses the societal benefits that come from speculation. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission recently filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit affirming the agency’s exclusive jurisdiction over prediction markets and extolling their value.

He was almost unhittable for VenezuelaJosh Timmers: I’m not worried about Palencia being able to handle the pressure of closing big games! Sara Sanchez: I’m still not sure Happ is the best left fielder in the league, but sure. Josh Timmers: Cubs starting pitching was a complete mess by the Brewers series though.

With the Iran war driving up the average price of gas more than a dollar per gallon, politicians are calling to suspend the gas tax until the crisis ends. In Maryland, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said in response to Democrats pushing for a suspension of their 23.5 cent gas tax. Then-President Joe Biden called for a three-month federal gas tax holiday, but Congress never passed it because most lawmakers recognized it was a gimmick. Setting aside politics, pausing the gas tax subsidizes demand during a supply shock.

Multiple outlets have reported that ICE is in at least 14 different airports, including John F. Kennedy International and La Guardia Airports in New York, Chicago-O’Hare International Airport, Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in Puerto Rico, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport. Megan Varner via Getty Images On March 23, ICE agents walked through a long line of travelers at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Could ICE seize and look through your phone at the airport if they decide to act like Customs and Border Patrol agents? But nonetheless, an ICE agent’s presence can have a “profound impact” on travelers, she said. Democrats are demanding ICE reforms, such as preventing ICE agents from wearing masks and imposing stronger use-of-force standards, in order for them to vote to fund DHS.

As The Times noted, Bovino wasn’t particularly concerned that he had overstepped with his tactics. Advertisement“We wanted total border domination,” Bovino said. We’re going to dominate the hell out of that damn place.”Gregory Bovino, the self-styled former “commander-at-large” of the U.S. Border Patrol, during a news conference in January. Without naming names, Bovino criticized his superiors as “status quo” bureaucrats who had rejected his “turn and burn” tactics of quickfire immigration arrests. The former Border Patrol boss is retiring this week in the wake of massive blowback about his brutal enforcement tactics in places like Minneapolis and Los Angeles.
