Something similar was revealed in the summary NASA released after conducting a hypothetical asteroid impact “tabletop” exercise to understand how any likely asteroid impact scenario can be averted. While NASA has been working to avert any such disaster, participants in the summary pointed out the main problem they might face if an asteroid impact becomes likely. The simulation had an asteroid with a 72 per cent chance of hitting Earth in 2038, impacting North America, Southern Europe, and North Africa. Lindley Johnson, a NASA planetary defense officer emeritus, said in a press release, that an asteroid impact is the only natural disaster man has the technology to predict. The NASA summary carries anonymous comments, one of which reads, "I know what I would prefer [to do], but Congress will tell us to wait."

Similar investments have been announced in other countries that share free trade agreements with the United States, including South Korea and Mexico. At least eight Chinese battery makers have announced new investments in the North African kingdom since President Joe Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act, the $430 billion U.S. law designed to fight climate change, according to an Associated Press tally. The United States and European Union have both imposed major new tariffs on Chinese vehicle imports since May. The Biden administration says the rules pave the way for billions in investment in EV manufacturing in the United States. “There is not going to be a lithium ion battery supply chain that does not have Chinese influence for a long time,” Berry said.

A MAD150 million ($14,635,368) loan is going to serve the mining sector in Morocco and help it set up its transition to carbon emissions-reduced operations. The new equipment will be more energy efficient, significantly reducing diesel consumption and lowering the company’s carbon emissions. Morocco has an ideal geographical location and exceptional phosphate resources, holding more than 75% of the world’s reserves. This contributes positively to Morocco’s energy transition profile as similar battery production-related projects are also currently taking place in Morocco. Morocco is a founding member of the EBRD and became a beneficiary of Bank resources in 2012.

Letter on hydrogen: Chasing Africa’s green prizeBP has joined the international push to try to unlock North Africa’s potential as a major green hydrogen producer and exporterThe race is on to unlock North Africa’s vast potential as a low-cost green hydrogen supplier. The latest big hitter to enter the fray is BP. The London-based oil and gas major has agreed to take on the role of main developer and operator of a potential large-scale project in Egypt, as part of a consortium comprising UAE renewables firm Masdar, Egypt’s Hassan Allam Utilities and Masdar joint venture Infinity Power. The consortium has signed a framework agreement with the Egyptian government to start feasibility studies. BP’s decision to join the consortium makes a lot of sense, given the company’s existing footprint in Egypt, where it has invested about $35b over the last 60 years.

President Kais Saied set Oct. 6 for the election in a decree issued late Tuesday, according to a statement from the presidency. Saied’s first term ends on Oct. 23. The election will be voters’ first chance to evaluate Saied’s tenure amid an economic crisis and the drift into authoritarianism. Analysts expect he will run for a second, five-year term given that the new constitution grants him full powers. Tunisia’s main opposition coalition has said it won’t take part in the presidential election unless Saied’s political opponents are freed and judicial independence is restored.
