The Multinational Joint Task Force in Lake Chad has stepped up operations against Boko Haram and Islamic State terrorists who escaped to Chad and Cameroon, the task force said. The task force has launched a major operation, dubbed Lake Sanity 2, to destroy all terrorist camps around Lake Chad. The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) is a combined multinational formation, comprising mostly military units from Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria. It is headquartered in N’Djamena and is mandated to bring an end to the Boko Haram insurgency. Nigeria has been struggling against Boko Haram terrorism since 2009, in a war that left at least 40,000 people dead.

The London-based oil and gas major has agreed to take on the role of main developer and operator of a potential large-scale project in Egypt, as part of a consortium comprising UAE renewables firm Masdar, Egypt’s Hassan Allam Utilities and Masdar joint venture Infinity Power. The consortium has signed a framework agreement with the Egyptian government to start feasibility studies. BP’s decision to join the consortium makes a lot of sense, given the company’s existing footprint in Egypt, where it has invested about $35b over the last 60 years.

President Kais Saied set Oct. 6 for the election in a decree issued late Tuesday, according to a statement from the presidency. Saied’s first term ends on Oct. 23. The election will be voters’ first chance to evaluate Saied’s tenure amid an economic crisis and the drift into authoritarianism. Analysts expect he will run for a second, five-year term given that the new constitution grants him full powers. Tunisia’s main opposition coalition has said it won’t take part in the presidential election unless Saied’s political opponents are freed and judicial independence is restored.
