Morocco’s National Railways Office (ONCF) has declared that starting from the early part of 2024, 90% of its electric trains have effectively shifted to utilizing “green” energy. Originally targeting 25% of trains on renewable energy, the ONCF has surpassed this goal, with 90% of electric trains now operating on electricity generated from wind power. This achievement contributes to ONCF’s broader objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to environmental sustainability. In January 2024, ONCF received certification for its MAD 1 billion ($99 thousand) green bond, reinforcing its dedication to low-carbon, sustainable transportation and aligning with the “Green Bonds Framework.” Morocco, as a nation, has shown a strong commitment to renewable energy, with projections indicating a substantial increase in green energy investments by 2027. Energy Minister Leila Benali emphasized the government’s focus on stimulating private sector investment in the green energy sector, anticipating a fourfold increase compared to the 2009-2022 period.

In 1994, the country held its first democratic elections after the fall of the racially segregationist system of apartheid that had brutally oppressed Black and other non-white South Africans since 1948.

Led by physicist René van Westen, the researchers focused on a phenomenon known as the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). The density of this salty water is higher than that of fresh water, so as the water cools, it sinks. At the 1750-year mark, the team observed the AMOC collapse from a flow rate of about 10 Sv to 2 Sv by model year 1850. “This means we are moving closer to the tipping point and are thus on route for tipping,” he tells Physics World. “One of the most important findings in our work is that AMOC tipping is possible and that it is not just a theoretical concept,” Westen emphasizes.

The French government has sent a series of positive signals to mend ties with its once longstanding partner in North Africa, Morocco, after relations worsened to an unprecedented level threatening to sap decades of cooperation. This strong message of willingness to foster ties, came following a series of positive remarks by French top diplomats. The new Foreign Minister, Stephane Séjourné, who led last year a campaign against Morocco at the European parliament, said he was tasked by President Emmanuel Macron to strengthen ties with Morocco. French ambassador to Morocco Christophe Lecourtier said mending ties requires Paris making its position clear on the Sahara. While French-Moroccan ties were faltering against the backdrop of a French retreat from the Sahel and a failure to strengthen ties with Algeria, Morocco forged ahead, diversifying economic and political ties with Spain unseating France as the main trading partner for the North African Kingdom.
