Underscoring the escalating migrant crisis in the North African nation, a staggering 1,313 migrants were to have died or went missing off the Tunisian coast last year, a rights group said on Tuesday. According to Ramadan Ben Amor, an official at the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, this figure accounted for approximately 75% of the total deaths or disappearances recorded off the coasts of Italy, Libya, and Malta. Tunisia has now supplanted Libya as the primary departure point in North Africa for individuals fleeing poverty and conflict across Africa and the Middle East, seeking refuge and opportunities for a better life in Europe. And with improving weather since January, the influx of African migrants, including Tunisians, in boats heading for Italy has increased. About 100 migrants have died or gone missing off the Tunisian coast since mid-January.

He called on the Clerk to Parliament to organise a blood donation week in Parliament, to enable MPs to participate. Opendi added that without the necessary equipment to preserve and store the blood, blood donation drives would not yield much. “There is nowhere to keep blood, much as we try to mobilise the blood donation, storage is a challenge,” she said.

In the past several weeks, Iranian cargo planes have been spotted landing in Port Sudan, the seat of Sudan’s military-led government since Khartoum fell to its rival in the country’s civil war, the Rapid Support Forces. Last month, also, the RSF shot down an Iranian drone being operated by the Sudanese armed forces. Both developments corroborate allegations that the Sudanese government’s recent reestablishment of diplomatic ties with Iran has been accompanied by military support in the conflict that broke out last April. The rapprochement underscores the many ways in which Abu Dhabi’s stance on Sudan’s civil war has backfired, putting its goals in Sudan in serious jeopardy. The Sudanese government’s claims were confirmed by a U.N. Panel of Experts report released last month, which deemed the allegations that the UAE is arming the RSF to be “credible.”

An Algerian prison sentence against a member of the Rguibat tribe provoked violent protests that took aim at the Polisario leadership in the Tindouf camps. Ahmed Ould Ben Ali, one of the thousands of disenchanted youths in Tindouf camps, was sentenced to 5 years in prison by the Algerian court on charges of drug trafficking. The sentence led many youths from his tribe to organize protests against Algerian authorities and their Polisario proxies, burning tires and blocking a key road. The situation is expected to worsen with the current Polisario leadership crackdown on dissident voices including those who call for compromise and back Morocco’s autonomy plan. Rights groups had repeatedly warned of the degradation of living conditions in the Tindouf camps and the UN urged Algeria to allow a census of the camps’ population.

Villa Baizeau by Le Corbusier, Tunisia Paul Allen/ Andfotography2The great Modernist designer Le Corbusier’s only architectural project in Africa was a seaside home for industrialist Lucien Baizeau who was based in Tunis. The villa has never been featured in exhibitions about Le Corbusier’s many architectural accomplishments and it's not even in Le Corbusier’s list of works on Wikipedia. Le Corbusier was famously not agreeable to clients’ ideas as he had a clear idea of a building’s form and function. He sent Le Corbusier a detailed contract, with photos of the terrain and plans to facilitate design work. While Le Corbusier usually attempted to maximize sunlight, this was his first residential project in North Africa.

On Monday, 5 February, the majority of MPs postponed the date of the election by 10 months,” said Professor Jean-Louis Corréa, a law lecturer at the Université Numérique Cheikh Hamidou Kane in Rufisque, near Dakar. “These acts constitute an extremely serious attack on the rights and freedoms of citizens and, consequently, on the political and social stability of Senegal, which has always been an example of democracy in Africa,” said Professor Mame Penda Ba, a law and political science lecturer at the Université Gaston-Berger in Saint-Louis in the north of the country.
