Men return from Libya on the way back to their countries of origin, in Agadez, Niger, Dec. 18, 2023. The country’s government, friendly to Europe, outlawed migration out of Agadez, and in exchange the European Union poured hundreds of millions of dollars into Niger’s coffers and the local economy. Agadez essentially turned into a border post for the European Union, thousands of miles from European shores. The European Union also promised to help those making a living from the migration business in the Agadez region find new jobs. Nigerian agri-tech startup ThriveAgric has kicked off its dry season farming cycle with the distribution of agricultural input, targeting over 100,000 smallholder farmers in northern Nigeria to facilitate the production of over 300,000MT of grains. Founded in 2017 and fully operational since 2018, ThriveAgric empowers farmers in Nigeria to sell their products to FMCGs and food processors, leveraging its proprietary technology to access finance as well as improve productivity and sales to promote food security. The technology, an agricultural operating system, works entirely offline, dispatches USSD to farmers, and powers Android apps used by field agents to help digitally collate creditworthy farmers and gather relevant farm data. ThriveAgric, which in March of 2022 raised a US$56.4 million round of debt funding from local commercial banks and institutional investors, will under this latest programme provide farmers with irrigation facilities, drought-resistant input, access to technology, storage, and premium markets to help optimise output in this farming cycle.

While this lacks legally binding force by definition, it serves as a guiding precedent in international law. An immediate ceasefire, or cessation of hostilities, is the prime provisional measure requested by South Africa. As a European, I particularly hope that Europe takes a stand and proves its commitment to international law and human rights, otherwise the role of international law will be more critically and irredeemably undermined. South Africa’s action against Israel seems to have opened a new era in the relations between the Global North and the Global South, and the symbolic impact is profound. The bold stance taken by South Africa, now followed by a number of countries, is remarkably powerful.

All records were beaten When Mohamed Yali Dellahi scored on 37 minutes, it was the first time Mauritania had ever led in an Africa Cup of Nations match.
