Morocco and the UAE have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on investment cooperation on the Africa-Atlantic gas pipeline, set to transport natural gas from Nigeria to Europe through West and North Africa. Under the agreement, which was signed during a state visit to Abu Dhabi by King Mohammed VI of Morocco last week, the UAE will provide financial and technical contributions to the project, which is poised to promote economic integration and energy security in West Africa. Providing a vital pathway for West African gas to international markets, the 5,600-km pipeline will span more than 13 countries along Africa’s Atlantic coast, connecting Nigeria’s gas to Europe through The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Senegal, Mauritania and Morocco. With strong political backing from Nigeria and other member-countries of the Economic Community of West African States, construction work on the pipeline is scheduled to begin in 2024, with feasibility studies for the pipeline currently underway. The agreement forms part of a series of MoUs signed between Morocco and the UAE, signaling the Gulf Arab state’s commitment to supporting socioeconomic integration and development in West and North Africa.
The Global Burden of Disease special report provides an update of health estimates for the global, regional and national burden and trends of cardiovascular disease from 1990‒2022 by analysing the impact of cardiovascular conditions and risk factors across 21 global regions. While cardiovascular disease rates are high globally, regions of Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East were estimated to have the highest burden of cardiovascular disease mortality, the study’s authors report. Key data from the study include that ischaemic heart disease remains the leading global cause of cardiovascular disease mortality, with an age-standardised rate per 100,000 of 108.8 deaths, followed by intracerebral haemorrhage and ischaemic stroke. Eastern Europe had the highest age-standardised total cardiovascular disease mortality at 553 deaths per 100,000, but contrastingly, countries in Australasia had the lowest age-standardised total cardiovascular disease mortality at 122.5 deaths per 100,000 people. The regions with the highest rates of cardiovascular disease burden attributable to dietary risk were Central Asia, Oceania, and parts of North Africa and the Middle East.

In North Africa, brutal striking laws, political conflicts and the short-term announcement crumbled the workers' lines on the global strike day. While some states in the Southwest and North African region transformed into ghost cities, participation in the strike in North Africa took a different path. Last week, Teachers' Unions agreed with the government and ended the strike. Throughout the six-week-long strike, teachers faced repercussions, including monthly salary reductions of up to 20%. From 1962 until 2011, all six of the North African Kingdom's constitutions stipulated strikes as a guaranteed right.

December 12, 2023 01:14 pm | Updated 01:14 pm IST - VILLUPURAMWith the onset of the winter season, hundreds of migratory birds have started arriving at Kazhuveli bird sanctuary in Villupuram district. The lake is connected to the Bay of Bengal by the Uppukalli Creek and the Yedayanthittu estuary and is visited for nesting by migratory birds on the Central Asian flyway. Kazhuveli is home to over 200 species of birds and is recognised as an important stopover and breeding ground for about 40,000 migratory birds. A pre-migratory season synchronised census of wetland birds has been scheduled on December 27 and 28, he said. Migratory birds, especially water birds utilize wetlands like Kazhuveli located between their breeding grounds and wintering sites as stop over sites during their northward and southward journeys.

Poets, playwrights, and filmmakers rubbed shoulders with—and sometimes took turns as—revolutionaries and freedom fighters in the era’s global struggles. As they agitated against imperial powers and autocratic regimes, these men supported one another with financing, military training, venues to publish and perform, and, perhaps most important, opportunities to serve as ideological sparring partners. Tolan-Szkilnik is perceptive and candid about the limits of liberation: women were hardly present except as the typists and messengers for a predictably patriarchal generation of revolutionaries. The ghost of one of the movement’s most acute analysts, the Marxist revolutionary and political philosopher Frantz Fanon, who died of leukemia at 36, in 1961, hovers over the entire assembly. Protesters have reportedly set fire to multiple trucks near the Majuba Pass, approximately 40km (25 miles) north of Newcastle, and are blocking traffic along the N11 highway as of early Dec. 11. The motive for the protest is unclear; however, it could be related to poor service delivery in the area. Authorities will likely deploy to extinguish the fires and manage the protest. Road traffic and public transport disruptions are likely. Officials may attempt to disperse the demonstrators, which could prompt clashes.

To understand the situation and developments in the Middle East, especially regarding the Palestinian issue, one should start with the famous Balfour Declaration[2]. Hamas transformed Gaza, especially the city of the same name, into a heavily fortified zone. Economically, it revolves around the discovery of the natural gas field near Gaza in 2002, known as the „Gaza Marine”. On the other hand, he added that neither should the Palestinian people be collectively punished for Hamas attacks. According to Al Jazeera, for every Palestinian released, Israel has arrested at least one other Palestinian.
