Police recovered the half-decomposed bodies of a woman and her teenage daughter from a private tutor’s residence in Keraniganj, Old Dhaka, 21 days after they went missing, officials said Thursday. Three people were arrested in connection with the incident — Fatema’s private tutor, Mim Akter, her husband Humayun, and her 15-year-old sister. According to police, Fatema went missing on the evening of December 25 while going to study at her private tutor’s house in a neighboring area. Mim later called Rokeya to the house by phone, and after she arrived, she was also strangled with a scarf. Inspector Ilias said the suspects continued to live normally in the house while keeping the bodies inside after the killings.

A dead dolphin has washed up on the beach of the popular tourist destination Kuakata, raising concerns among locals and environmentalists. The dolphin's body was spotted this morning in the Swapna Rajya Park area on the west side of the beach by Solemar Biswas, a member of the Kuakata Dolphin Protection Committee. The crisis in Bangladesh cricket has taken a serious turn as Mohammad Mithun, President of the Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), said he is receiving severe threats involving physical harm against players. Mithun alleged that he has been receiving abusive calls and WhatsApp messages from various unknown domestic and international numbers. Islami Andolan Bangladesh has announced it will not remain part of the Jamaat-e-Islami–led 11-party seat-sharing alliance and will contest the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election independently in 268 constituencies. On Thursday, the 11-party alliance announced its seat-sharing arrangement for the national election in 253 constituencies, allocating 179 seats to Jamaat-e-Islami and 30 to the National Citizen Party (NCP), while leaving 47 seats unallocated for Islami Andolan Bangladesh out of the total 300 seats. Islami Andolan did not send any representative to the announcement, signaling uncertainty over its position within the alliance. Commenting on the matter, Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said: “They are working things out among themselves. I hope they will join us.”Alliance sources said Islami Andolan had demanded at least 70 seats, and Jamaat and its allies are continuing efforts to keep the party within the alliance.

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said Thursday she “presented” her Nobel Peace Prize medal to Donald Trump, in a bid to win over the US president who had sidelined her since overthrowing Nicolas Maduro. Despite the gesture, Trump has backed Maduro’s vice president Delcy Rodriguez over Machado -- so long as she toes Washington’s line, particularly on access to Venezuela’s vast oil reserves. “I presented the president of the United States the medal of the Nobel Peace Prize,” Machado told reporters outside the US capitol, where she met with lawmakers after having lunch with Trump at the White House. Police have obtained a preliminary assessment of the cause of a devastating fire at a seven-story residential building in Uttara, Dhaka, that killed six people. The blaze originated in the kitchen of a flat on the building’s second floor. OC Rafiqul Ahmed said: “Our investigation so far indicates that the fire started in the kitchen of a flat on the second floor. Of the deceased, three passed away at Kuwait Maitree Hospital, two at a private hospital in Uttara, and one at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Earlier, the Fire Service reported that the fire broke out at 7:50am on Friday on the second floor of the building located on Road No 18 in Sector 11, Uttara.
