Carney, who arrives Wednesday, aims to double Canada’s non-US exports over the next decade and expand trade partnerships worldwide. “At a time of global trade disruption, Canada is focused on building a more competitive, sustainable and independent economy,” he said. Canadian officials said the visit seeks to re-energize a dormant strategic partnership with China and ease trade frictions, though no major tariff removals are expected. In a related move, two Canadian lawmakers cut short a trip to Taiwan to avoid confusion over Canada’s China policy, while reaffirming Canada’s stance on the self-governed island. Carney will also travel to Qatar and the World Economic Forum in Davos after his China visit, and plans to visit India later this year to further diversify Canada’s international partnerships.

The high number of revocations reflects the broad scope of Trump’s immigration crackdown since returning to the White House. “We will continue to deport these thugs to keep America safe,” the State Department said in its post on X. State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the four main reasons for visa revocations were overstays, driving under the influence, assault, and theft. In November, the State Department had reported revoking around 80,000 non-immigrant visas since Trump’s inauguration for offences including driving under the influence, assault, and theft. Public outrage has also grown over the use of force in Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed on Tuesday said the government has prepared a long-term energy strategy recognising fuel security as one of Bangladesh’s major challenges. “Energy remains a critical issue for the economy as both power and energy sectors rely heavily on a secure supply. Responding to a recent Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) report claiming advisers exercise more power than formal institutions, Dr Salehuddin said such narratives are common and not unusual. Addressing concerns over persistently high inflation, Dr Salehuddin said, “High inflation is not just about supply and demand, nor can it be solved simply by increasing the policy rate. Asian markets mostly rose on Tuesday with Tokyo closing at a record high on speculation over a snap election, while concerns about Iran pushed oil prices higher. The rallies followed another record finish on Wall Street overnight, where investors shrugged off worries about a US criminal probe of the Federal Reserve central bank. Takaichi became Japan’s first woman prime minister in October and her cabinet has an approval rating of around 70%. Broad optimism over the global economy and technological advances such as artificial intelligence have buoyed market sentiment in recent months. US President Donald Trump is considering air strikes on Iran to stop a crackdown on protesters, the White House said Monday, adding that people were being “killed on the streets.”But a channel for diplomacy remains open, with Iran taking a “far different tone” in private discussions with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. “One thing President Trump is very good at is always keeping all of his options on the table. And air strikes would be one of the many, many options that are on the table for the commander in chief,” Leavitt told reporters outside the West Wing. Iran’s foreign ministry said earlier Monday that a channel of communication was open between its top diplomat Abbas Araghchi and Trump’s special envoy, despite a lack of diplomatic relations. Trump said on Sunday that the US military was considering “very strong options” against Iran, saying it “looks like” Tehran had crossed his previously stated red line of protesters being killed.
