Photo : BSSBAGERHAT, Dec 19, 2025 (BSS) - A protest march was held here in the district today demanding the immediate arrest and trial of those responsible for the killing of Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi. The protest was attended by Central Organizing Secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Mainul Islam, DUCSU executive member Belal Hossain Apu, Bagerhat district convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement S. M. Saddam, Bagerhat district president of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir Hafez Morshed Alam, Bagerhat district Chhatra Dal leader Al Mamun, along with leaders and activists from various political and social organizations. During the march, participants chanted slogans such as "We will all be Hadis" and "Who are you and who am I -- Hadi Hadi." At a brief rally following the procession, speakers said Sharif Osman Hadi was killed for speaking out against Indian hegemony and aggression. Earlier in the day, following Friday prayers, a special prayer was held at the historic Shatgombuj Mosque in Bagerhat-along with similar prayers across the country-seeking forgiveness for the departed soul of Sharif Osman Hadi.

The US Senate has approved Brent T Christensen as the next United States ambassador to Bangladesh. He will become the 18th US ambassador in Dhaka. Christensen confirmed the Senate’s approval himself. He has prior experience at the US Embassy in Dhaka, having served from 2019 to 2021 as political and economic counselor. The previous US ambassador in Dhaka was Peter Haas, who served as the 17th ambassador from March 2022 to April 2024.

The interim government has declared state mourning on Saturday over Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi’s death, who was shot in the head by assailants. The UNESCO has recognised the Tangail saree weaving industry as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. An order on whether to frame charges against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and a group of former serving Army officers in the Joint Interrogation Cell (JIC) “abduction and torture” crimes against humanity case will be delivered on Dec 14.
