Hasina, sentenced to death in absentia in November 2025 by the International Crimes Tribunal, fled to India in August 2024. The Bangladesh Supreme Court had declared its registration illegal in 2013, deeming the party unfit for national polls. The Bangladesh Labour Party ended its 18-year alliance, and both the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Rab) chose to contest independently. Some consolidation came through mergers with the Bangladesh Liberal Democratic Party and Bangladesh Jatiya Dal.

PAARL, South Africa, Jan 28, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Aiden Markram powered South Africa to a nine-wicket win in the first Twenty20 international against the West Indies at Boland Park on Tuesday. The three-match series is the final preparation for both teams before the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next month. South Africa rested several players who were involved in the SA20 franchise final on Sunday, including first-choice opening batsman Quinton de Kock. Shimron Hetmyer hit 48 off 32 balls for the West Indies but no other batsman reached 30 in what captain Roston Chase said was a below-par total. South African left-arm spinner George Linde was named man of the match.

Santos struck after 91 minutes with a shot and Leon with a header three minutes later against fifth-placed Sekhukhune in northern city Polokwane to earn Sundowns a ninth league win this season. "Our subs were fantastic," said Sundowns' Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso as the winners of the last eight Premiership title races moved to 32 points from 15 matches. Sekhukhune coach and 1996 Africa Cup of Nations-winning midfielder Eric Tinkler said the quality of Sundowns' bench made the difference. Only the brilliance of Sekhukhune goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner kept Sundowns goalless for so long. Sundowns were captained by 40-year-old goalkeeper Denis Onyango, who played for Uganda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

WASHINGTON, United States, Jan 28, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Russia's grinding invasion of Ukraine has caused nearly two million military casualties -- killed, wounded or missing -- between the two countries, according to a study published Tuesday by a US think tank. Moscow's forces have borne the brunt of the losses, suffering as many as 325,000 killed out of an estimated total of 1.2 million casualties since invading Ukraine nearly four years ago, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) found. "No major power has suffered anywhere near these numbers of casualties or fatalities in any war since World War II," CSIS said, noting that "Russian forces are advancing remarkably slowly on the battlefield." "Combined Russian and Ukrainian casualties may be as high as 1.8 million and could reach two million total casualties by the spring of 2026," CSIS said. The war has also taken a heavy toll on civilians, with United Nations monitors recording more civilian deaths in Ukraine in 2025 than in any other year except 2022.

US probe to determine cause of 2025 DC air collisionNEW YORK, Jan 28, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - US safety officials met Tuesday to determine the probable cause of a crash between a military helicopter and a passenger jet a year ago near a Washington-area airport. NTSB board members voted on a probable cause and recommendations, with a final report expected in the coming weeks. The investigative agency had released earlier "urgent" recommendations with restrictions on military helicopters near Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) when certain runways are in use. Among their findings, investigators discovered more than "18 reports per year on average of close calls between airplanes and helicopters near DCA in the four years before the accident." In the Potomac River area where the collision occurred, helicopters are required to stay below 61 meters (200 feet).

"I'm here because I love Iowa, but I'm here because we're starting the campaign to win the midterms. Got to win the midterms," second-term president Trump said in his speech. Protesters disrupted Trump's speech on at least two occasions, with the Republican dismissing them as "sickos" and "paid insurrectionists." The political row over immigration sees Trump in an unusually tight spot of one of his core campaign issues. During his Iowa speech Trump veered off as he often does into talking about immigration, including renewed attacks on Ilhan Omar, a Democrat who is the first Somali-American elected to Congress.

NEW YORK, Jan 28, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Global stocks were mixed Tuesday ahead of a Federal Reserve interest rate decision and earnings from US tech giants while the dollar hit a four and a half year low against the euro. Major US indices moved in opposite directions, with gains by Apple, Amazon and other tech giants helping to lift the S&P 500 to a record, while the Dow retreated. While tech shares mostly rose, US health insurance stocks plunged after an announcement of a lower than expected pay increase related to a leading US government Medicare program. But the euro piled on more than one percent against the dollar, climbing to above $1.20 for the first time since 2021. The already weakened dollar fell again Tuesday afternoon after Trump seemed to welcome the weakening of the US currency, saying that the greenback was "doing great."

JAKARTA, Jan 28, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - The death toll from a landslide in Indonesia has risen to 34 with dozens still missing, authorities said on Wednesday, days after the torrent of debris crashed through a mountain village. Heavy rain triggered the landslide that barrelled through Pasirlangu on Saturday, severely damaging dozens of homes and displacing hundreds. As of 7:30 pm (1230 GMT) on Tuesday, 34 victims had been identified, national disaster mitigation agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said. The number of people missing was revised down to 32, but local authorities fear the true figure could be significantly higher. But they are treading carefully for fear of another landslide due to bad weather.

US Fed set to pause rate cuts as it defies Trump pressureWASHINGTON, United States, Jan 28, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - The US Federal Reserve is broadly expected to pause its series of interest rate cuts Wednesday, resisting mounting attacks from President Donald Trump, while policymakers await more data on the world's biggest economy. The lack of urgency, however, could put the central bank again at odds with Trump, who has repeatedly called for large rate reductions. Officials appear to have converged on a near-term halt in rate reductions, with their debate now centering around what conditions justify further rate cuts -- and how quickly these should take place. Fed Governor Stephen Miran, appointed by Trump last year to fill a term lasting until late January, is likely to again push for lower rates, North said. - Credibility issues -One issue is whether the new chairman can corral the rest of the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee into more rate cuts, ING analysts said in a note.
