Former residents and descendants of those who grew up in the historic Black community of Africville are incensed after five people were shot on Saturday during the community's annual reunion in Halifax. This weekend marked the 41st annual Africville Family Reunion, which aims to bring together former residents and their descendants. The community was uprooted in the 1960s when the City of Halifax demolished homes in the neighbourhood and residents were displaced. Halifax Regional Police said Sunday that five people in attendance were shot Saturday night when two men exchanged gunfire and the bullets went into the crowd. Olympic organizers remain confident, though, that there will be a swim in the Seine for the triathlon event at some point this week. Athletes can qualify for the Games as individuals or as part of a country’s mixed relay team. Unfortunately Canada only qualified three athletes this year, so the country won’t be involved in the mixed relay next week. “The course of the triathlon and Para triathlon events in Paris is just everything that the family of triathlon has been dreaming of for years,” says Marisol Casado, President of World Triathlon and IOC member. For last year’s test event, the elite individual races did include the swim, but the swim was cancelled for the Para and mixed relay races.

Drunk driving continues to be a persistent problem in Ontario, with one in three road deaths involving impaired drivers, according to provincial data. Meanwhile, the total number of impaired driving charges laid annually steadily increased from 2020 to 2023, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say. In May, the provincial government announced new legislation that would impose tougher penalties for drunk drivers, including a lifetime licence suspension for those convicted of impaired driving causing death. Harsher penalties may deter some people from drunk driving but don't necessarily account for the skewed judgment that leads to it in the first place, according to Kharlip. When he announced the new legislation in May , Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said that drunk driving remains too pervasive a problem in the province.

After a days-long search spanning kilometres around the hamlet of Bragg Creek, Alta., a championship endurance horse was reunited with its family. Owner Rosalynn Peschl said she and her husband, Houston Peschl, felt "tremendous relief" upon seeing Flex standing in a forest clearing.
