TROMSO, Norway—With Arctic security dominating headlines following U.S. President Donald Trump’s calls for the United States to take control of Greenland, this year’s Arctic Frontiers conference is drawing heightened attention — including with several Canadian speakers on the program. Held annually in the Arctic city of Tromsø, Arctic Frontiers brings together politicians, Indigenous leaders, scientists, business representatives, researchers and policymakers to discuss issues shaping the circumpolar North. Prominent Canadians addressing the conference this year include Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon, who will deliver a keynote during a session on the state of Arctic affairs. Their participation comes as Arctic Frontiers opens amid growing attention to security issues in the North, a shift that organizers say is influencing, but not defining, the conference agenda. “Since the start of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, security policy and geopolitics have featured in an ever more prominent role in the discussions about the Arctic, and Arctic Frontiers is no exception,” Anu Fredrikson, executive director of Arctic Frontiers, said.

Naturally the hockey games featuring Team Canada will be covered in full live. Other hockey games will likely be available live. Milan is six hours ahead of Toronto, so the latest you can reasonably start a hockey game is late afternoon in the eastern time zone. The first NHL games played after the Olympics are on Wednesday, February 25, and the Leafs start a back-to-back that evening. Anyone who believes that's a reasonable schedule for NHL hockey is living in a fantasy land.

Twenty years ago, Stephen Harper was the first leader to lead the Conservative Party of Canada to victory. Advertisement AdvertisementAdvertisement AdvertisementHarper’s counterpoint (which obviously wasn’t enough to win him the election) was that the Liberals were simply lying. He warned of a massive influx of unscreened migrationThe 2015 campaign also played out amid controversy over Canada’s handling of the Syrian refugee crisis. The 2019 affair was sparked because then prime minister Trudeau pressured his justice minister, Jody Wilson-Raybould, to consider giving SNC-Lavalin a deferred prosecution agreement in a corruption case. None of this was enough for the Liberals to do like Harper and suspend taxpayer contributions to the agency.

But while patting oneself on the back is tempting, contrasting the Harper years with what came after is more instructive. Federal debt under Prime Minister Stephen Harper grew to from $494.4 billion in 2005-06 to $612.3 billion in 2014-15, due mainly to deficits intended to mitigate the 2008 financial crisis. Average house prices increased by 49 per cent under Harper, to $413,000, but then jumped 97 per cent between 2015 and 2021, to $811,700. The Harper government was generally laissez-faire on energy, with a lower regulatory burden, and oil production increased by almost 50 per cent. Podcaster Konstantin Kisin gave an apt description of how many people view politics: liberals are well-intentioned but incompetent, conservatives are competent but evil.
