PARIS (Reuters) -Shares in French satellite company Eutelsat surged on Thursday after the company rejected a bid proposal from billionaire Patrick Drahi, whose business interests include auction house Sotheby’s and media group Altice. “Eutelsat Communications confirms that the proposal received from Mr. Patrick Drahi – and rejected unanimously by therelevant governance bodies of the company – prices Eutelsat at 12.10 euros per share, all dividend attached,” it said. Eutelsat shares were up by 15.6% at 11.97 euros in early trade – just below Drahi’s bid proposal – and giving the company a stock market value of around 2.4 billion euros ($2.8 billion). TAIPEI (Reuters) -Taiwan may benefit from orders being shifted to the island if China’s power curbs disrupt the country’s exports, Taiwan Central Bank Governor Yang Chin-long said on Thursday. Yang, taking lawmaker questions in parliament, said that if China’s power crunch caused its exports to do badly, manufacturers could shift orders to the island. China’s new export orders contracted again in September, but less than the previous month, according to its official manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). Yang said the central bank is also paying close attention to the impact of China’s electricity problems on financial markets. If the United States decides to raise rates, Taiwan may also consider following suit, he said.

U.S. initial jobless claims rose for a third straight week to 362,000 for the period ending Sept. 25, data showed. For the month, the dollar ended up 1.7%, its second straight monthly gain. For the third quarter, the dollar rose 2%. Yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note stood at 1.524%, holding near a three-month high reached Tuesday of 1.567%. Europe’s single currency was down 1.9% against the dollar for the month and 2.2% weaker for the third quarter.

Separate data out on Thursday showed retail sales in August slipped for the first time in six months as households cut spending amid a coronavirus relapse, signalling lacklustre consumer sentiment. Factory output lost 3.2% in August from the previous month, official data showed on Thursday, hit by weaker production of cars and electronic machines and marking the second consecutive month of contraction after a 1.5% drop in July. The government downgraded its assessment of industrial production for the first time since April 2020, saying it was “stalling”.
