NEW YORK (Reuters) – The dollar rose on Friday in line with higher U.S. Treasury yields as investors focused on when the Federal Reserve is likely to begin reducing its asset purchases. The greenback has risen from a one-month low reached last Friday after jobs data for August showed that jobs growth slowed, while wage inflation rose more than expected. Fed officials are grappling with rising price pressures while jobs growth remains below their targets. The Wall Street Journal on Friday wrote that Fed officials will seek to make an agreement at the Fed’s September meeting to begin paring bond purchases in November. The euro fell 0.07% to $1.1816 on Friday, a day after the European Central Bank said it will trim emergency bond purchases over the coming quarter.

Last week, California lawmakers passed a bill that would launch a pilot program focused on tracking the gender identity and sexual orientation of victims of violent deaths. The bill, which was approved overwhelmingly by both chambers, now heads to the desk of Gov. “There is a lack of understanding about the relationship between risk of violent death, such as suicide or homicide, and an individual’s sexual orientation and gender identity,” the bill’s text reads. “This is because, unlike veteran status or ethnicity, the sexual orientation and gender identity of deceased individuals are only captured in special circumstances. “We must have better data to understand the scope of what’s happening in our LGBTQ community — especially among the youth — when it comes to violent deaths, including homicide and suicide.

A study out of England has found that by combining multiple approaches to tackling HIV, new diagnoses of the virus plummeted. The study, conducted at sexual health clinic 56 Dean Street in London, was published in the journal HIV Medicine, ContagionLive reports. Specifically, Girometti highlighted PrEP to prevent new HIV infections, increased and readily available testing to detect new infections early, and the use of antiretroviral treatments to get those living with HIV to undetectable status. One study of serodiscordant gay couples found zero instances of transmission where the partner living with HIV was undetectable. Girometti said that, moving forward, researchers would be focusing on the impact on HIV infections following the “wider introduction of PrEP which started happening in 2018.” Researchers will also try to determine impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on HIV testing and diagnoses.

NORTHBOROUGH — A man was killed in an early morning fire Friday inside a Maple Street apartment where a fire official said a lack of smoke alarms allowed the blaze to spread unchecked throughout the building. The fire started in the victim’s apartment unit, the chief said. Firefighters found just one smoke alarm throughout the house, in the basement. Parente said the house should have had a hard-wired smoke alarm in every common area, including all hallways, as well as battery-operated smoke alarms in each apartment unit. “The lack of smoke detectors allowed the fire to get ahead of us,” said Parente.
