That’s what drew India Schneider-Crease, Tyler Eglen and the Arizona State University chapter of Engineers Without Borders to Ethiopia this summer. They grew and developed as engineers by working with their hands and minds to create these plastic recycling machines alongside local engineers and students from Addis." On their final Friday afternoon in Ethiopia, the machines were still not working — and the clock was ticking. “And a very educational and enriching experience.”Organizers plan to return to Ethiopia next year where more engineering students can continue to work on the project. The collaborations between the ASU and Ethiopian student engineers were also of great value.

Ethiopia has emerged as the leading destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) in East Africa, according to the latest World Investment Report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The country secured $3.3 billion in FDI in 2023, surpassing its neighbors Kenya and Uganda, with the Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) revealing it attracted $3 billion in the first ten months of the 2023/24 fiscal year. China was a major contributor, accounting for nearly half of all FDI projects, with public-private partnerships (PPP) also playing a crucial part. According to the EIC’s data, PPPs led to numerous investments in the country’s economy, including the UAE’s AMEA Power’s $600 million investment in the Aysha wind power project. Additionally, Ethiopia’s decision to welcome foreign investment in digital payment systems also contributed to its FDI in the year under review.

The EU warned on Monday that Iran's direction is increasing the risk of a nuclear proliferation crisis in the Middle East. In April, the International Atomic Energy Agency warned that Iran could be months or weeks away from being able to build a nuclear weapon. Mr Lambrinidis called on Iran not to proceed with its plans, as that would “undoubtedly put at risk any future nuclear diplomacy”. He said Iran’s nuclear activities, including enrichment at various levels, are for “peaceful purposes”. Under the deal, Iran minimised nuclear research and accepted UN inspections of its atomic complexes in exchange for the lifting of tight economic sanctions.
