Ethiopia's agreement with breakaway region Somaliland, seeking port access in exchange for potential sovereignty recognition, could cause upheaval in the Horn of Africa. Under different circumstances, the kind of deal agreed between Ethiopia and the breakaway region of Somaliland would have been relatively straightforward. From a Somali point of view, this would make all further steps by Ethiopia and Somaliland illegal. Port access, airline shares and a promise to SomalilandAt the epicenter of the deal is the commercial port of Berbera, which has recently been significantly expanded by DP World, a port logistics company based in the United Arab Emirates. Besides using the port for international trade, Ethiopia also wants to lease land from Somaliland to build a naval base.

Ethiopian Cargo & Logistics Service has launched its freighter service to Casablanca, Morocco, adding to its network of 35 freighter destinations across Africa. Ethiopian Cargo is a key operational division within the Ethiopian Airlines Group. "We are thrilled to announce the commencement of freighter services to Casablanca, marking our first foray into the Maghreb region within our global freighter network,” says Mesfin Tasew, CEO, of Ethiopian Airlines Group. “This expansion elevates our total African freighter destinations to 35, reinforcing our commitment to providing reliable and efficient services. With those and other enabling factors in place, could Ethiopia be Africa’s next big fintech giant? Those telcos will play a critical role in establishing an Ethiopian fintech ecosystem too. One of the key avenues it’s identified for doing so is by scaling digital payments through mobile money services. GSMA figures show that just 4.2% of adult women and 5.1% of adult men had mobile money accounts in 2022. The army chiefs of landlocked Ethiopia and the self-declared Republic of Somaliland have been discussing military co-operation as concern grows over a deal that could give Ethiopia a naval base on the Gulf of Aden.

New York: United and Alaska Airlines both reported on Monday that loose hardware had been discovered on some of their Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes during preliminary inspections after a dramatic mid-flight incident last week. Hours later, Alaska Airlines said its staff had found that "loose hardware was visible on some aircraft." Following the Alaska Airlines incident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered operators to ground 171 jets with the same door plug configuration. Alaska Airlines said it was still awaiting "final documentation" from Boeing and the FAA before beginning the formal inspection process. Analysts said the Alaska Airlines problems may have stemmed from a manufacturing defect.

An MoU is a statement of intent rather than a legally binding agreement but what seems clear is that Somaliland is ready to grant Ethiopia access to the sea for commercial traffic through a port, although it is not clear which port that would be.

The African Union urged calm in the ensuing row, and the European Union urged Ethiopia to respect Somalia’s territorial integrity. Landlocked countries like Uganda and Rwanda, which have a strong national security mindset, will have been intrigued by some of the reported provisions. Addis is spoilt for choice: Either through Eritrea, whose independence in 1993 left it landlocked, or via Djibouti, or Somalia. Though weakened by the Tigray war, Ethiopia is still a military behemoth relative to Somalia.
