It bases its findings on a range of sources including interviews with victims and witnesses, submissions and satellite imagery. The COI has previously alleged that both Israel and Hamas committed war crimes in the early stages of the Gaza war, and that Israel’s actions also constituted crimes against humanity because of the immense civilian losses. The term is reserved for the most serious international crimes knowingly committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack against civilians. The COI has accused Israel of obstructing its work and preventing investigators from accessing both Israel and the Palestinian territories. Sometimes, the evidence gathered by such UN-mandated bodies has formed the basis for war crimes prosecutions and could be drawn on by the International Criminal Court.

NAIROBI: The leaders of Egypt, Eritrea and Somalia pledged Thursday to work together on regional security at an unprecedented summit held against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Horn of Africa. Thursday’s summit in Asmara signalled the forging of a new regional alliance in the Horn, with Ethiopia — Africa’s second-most populous nation — left out in the cold. Relations have soured dramatically between Ethiopia and neighboring Somalia, which was enraged by the Somaliland maritime deal and has since moved closer to Addis Ababa’s longtime regional rival Cairo. Relations between Addis Ababa and Asmara have also been deteriorating recently, even though Eritrean troops backed Ethiopian government forces in the brutal 2020-2022 war against Tigrayan rebels. Analysts say Eritrea was not happy with the peace agreement between Addis Ababa and Asmara’s longstanding enemy the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), and still has troops in parts of Tigray.

Ethio Telecom will be the first company to list on the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX), the country’s new bourse kicks off next week. The revelation was made by Brook Taye, CEO of the state investment arm Ethiopia Investment Holdings, to Reuters. Ethio Telecom enjoyed a virtual monopoly until the government granted a license to Kenya’s Safaricom in 2022 as part of ongoing economic reforms to foster competition by privatising previously protected sectors. In September, Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru said that the telco will aim for 75% growth over the next year by enhancing its existing services, launching new offerings, and expanding enterprise solutions. “We’re seeing banks in our neighbourhood looking at Ethiopia, we’re seeing North African banks looking at Ethiopia, and some of household banks in West Africa also looking at Ethiopia,” Taye added.

Egypt, Somalia, and Eritrea Forge Alliance Amidst Ethiopia TensionsASMARA, Eritrea - In a significant diplomatic move, Egypt, Somalia, and Eritrea have solidified their alliance, escalating regional tensions primarily directed against Ethiopia. Somalia, feeling its sovereignty threatened by Ethiopia's recognition of Somaliland, has found common cause with Egypt, leading to increased military cooperation. Notably, Egypt has begun deploying military equipment and personnel to Somalia, not only to bolster its military but also as a strategic message to Ethiopia. The Eritrean President, known for his reserved foreign policy, sees this alliance as a means to counterbalance Ethiopia's regional maneuvers. Such an alliance could reshape the geopolitical dynamics of the Horn of Africa, influencing everything from trade routes to military alliances.

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El Sisi arrived in Eritrea's capital Asmara on Thursday for talks with his Eritrean counterpart Isaias Afwerki, the Egyptian presidency said. Their visit comes during heightened turmoil in the Horn of Africa amid multiple wars and disputes that have changed the region’s dynamics significantly. Egypt then began conducting talks with Eritrea in September to explore increased military and intelligence ties, Egyptian former assistant foreign minister Rakha Ahmed Hassan told The National. Eritrea and Ethiopia have had a historically fraught relationship, which was described by the United States Institute of Peace as more akin to a rivalry in a 2023 report. Egypt and Eritrea have maintained strong diplomatic relations since Eritrea's independence from Ethiopia in 1993.

Two years have passed since the murder of Jina (“Mahsa”) Amini, a young Kurdish-Iranian woman, at the hands of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s morality police. Amini was brutalized and killed for allegedly wearing her hijab, or head-covering, improperly – the sort of “crime” that sends a backward theocracy apoplectic with rage. Her death sparked the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, the latest and perhaps most significant wave of protest among the millions of ordinary Iranians who have been clamoring for regime change for well over a decade, but who have so far been unable to dislodge the ruling mullahs.

By Fatima Hussein | The Associated PressSherri Myers, an 82-year-old resident of Pensacola City, Florida, says the Social Security cost-of-living increase she’ll receive in January “won’t make a dent” in helping her meet her day-to-day expenses. About 70.6 million Social Security recipients are expected to receive a smaller cost of living increase for 2025 than in recent years, as inflation has moderated. The Social Security Administration makes the official COLA announcement Thursday, and analysts predicted in advance it would be 2.5% for 2025. The maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security payroll taxes was $168,600 for 2024, up from $160,200 in 2023. The Republican Study Committee’s Fiscal Year 2025 plan has proposed cutting Social Security costs by raising the retirement age and reducing the annual COLA.

By Ashleigh Furlong and Jef Feeley | BloombergGSK Plc said it will pay as much as $2.2 billion to resolve about 80,000 US court cases related to allegations that its old reflux medication Zantac was contaminated with a suspected carcinogen. The cases represent about 93% of those against the company involving Zantac, GSK said Wednesday in a statement. The US Food and Drug Administration asked companies producing Zantac to remove all ranitidine-based drugs from the US market in 2020. Pfizer agreed to settle more than 10,000 related cases, Bloomberg reported in May. Valisure had alleged that GSK knew and hid the risks of Zantac from the US government.

The greater Los Angeles area suffered a nearly 20% drop in scripted film and television production in 2023 compared to the prior year, continuing several years of declines, according to a report released Wednesday. FilmLA, the area’s film office, reported that the region’s scripted film and TV production fell to 183 projects last year, a drop of 45 from the prior year, and representing only a small fraction of the 990 total projects produced in all jurisdictions in 2023. According to FilmLA, the greater Los Angeles area was home to nearly 23% of scripted projects in 2021, but that share fell to 22% in 2022 and slipped to 18% last year. “For each film industry supplier that closes his or her doors due to lack of steady work — those entrepreneurs no longer employ people, generate sales taxes or pay rent. “Our community members’ livelihoods are on the line, which is why Los Angeles County launched the Entertainment Business Interruption Fund, and we continue to explore ways to incentivize local production,” Horvath said.
