The February GST mop-up shows an impressive year-on-year rise of 8.1%, with gross collections touching about ₹1.83 lakh crore. Yet, a critical vulnerability has been largely overlooked — the not-so-trivial import IGST numbers, which saw a spike of over 17% this February compared with last year. This must be viewed from a holistic perspective to understand how it affects consumption, prices and the growing disparity in GST collections between States. Import IGST collections in February rose to roughly ₹47,800 crore, up from about ₹40,800 crore a year ago. Higher input costs could nullify GST rationalisation price relief, leading to higher costs for consumers.

VIJAYAWADA: Describing the sanction of long-pending agricultural power connections as a major relief to farmers, Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu on Monday said the coalition government’s decision would ensure irrigation security and strengthen the farm sector across the state. The Minister said the government has decided to grant a total of 46,113 agricultural electricity connections in a phased manner to clear applications that had been pending for several years in various districts. Of these, 6,593 connections fall under the jurisdiction of APCPDCL, 11,926 under APSPDCL and 27,594 under APEPDCL. He thanked Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar for responding positively to his request and taking a swift decision on the issue. He said the move would provide much-needed irrigation support to farmers, improve crop yields and reduce uncertainty in cultivation.

India is closely monitoring the evolving security situation in parts of West Asia following the recent escalation of tensions, with Indian Navy ships deployed in the region under Operation Sankalp placed on standby for possible humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations. “Under Operation Sankalp, two Indian Navy ships (a frigate and a destroyer) are already deployed in the Gulf of Aden and the Gulf of Oman. They have been deployed for anti-piracy operations and the safety of merchant vessels since 2019. The deployment under Operation Sankalp was initiated to safeguard Indian-flagged vessels and ensure maritime security in the region amid rising threats to commercial shipping. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed grave concern over the proliferation of "spurious" and "substandard drugs" that pose a serious threat to life. At an open house discussion here on "Measures to curb spurious medicines in India", NHRC member Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi said in a country as vast and diverse as India, even isolated regulatory challenges could translate into large-scale human distress if not addressed decisively and systematically.
